III. PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Activity Good morning, Class. Good morning, Teacher!

Before I reveal our lesson for today, let’s

have an activity first. Okay, Teacher.

But before that, I will give you an

example for your reference.

So, for example, the word "FEEL" and

the past tense is FELT. Just like that
okay? I'm going to give you a word and
then you will provide its past tense. Got
it, class? Yes, Teacher.

This game is called “Tell me!”.

Okay now, the first word is sleep. Who

among you here can provide the past
tense of the word sleep? Student (raising her hand)
Slept, Teacher.
Yes, that’s right!

Okay next, what is the past tense of the

word write? Student (raising his hand)
Wrote, Teacher.
Okay, very good!

B. Analysis So now, I have a pen here, I will play a

song, and whoever holds the pen when
the music stops you have to share your
observations from our activity. Okay, Teacher!

(Music stopped)
(Student answered) I have
observed in our activity
that we talked about an
action or a situation that
happened in the past.
Well said.

Can you give another example of an

action or situation in the past? (Student answered) I ate
my breakfast.
Okay, that’s a good example. Well done
class! I think everyone is ready for our
topic for today. I want you to listen
attentively because we will be having a
quiz after the discussion.
Okay, Teacher.
C. Abstraction Before we start, let us first define what is
the past tense and past perfect tense.

Past tense – is used to talk about actions

that happened at a specific time in the
past, an action or series of events in the
past that are now finished.
For regular verbs, add -ed to the root
form of the verb (or just -d if the root
form already ends in an e):
Examples: play- played, type - typed,
listen - listened, push - pushed, & love -
loved.

For irregular verbs, including the verb to

be, the simple past forms are more
erratic:
Examples: see - saw, build - built, go -
went, do - did, rise - rose, & am/is/are -
was/were.

Examples in a sentence:
1. We played basketball yesterday.
2. I went to the park last Sunday.

Who among you here can give me

another example of past tense in a
sentence? (Student answered) Tom
performed in the show.
The past tense is the verb
performed.
Very good. So, now let us proceed to the
past perfect tense.

Past perfect tense – is used when you are

talking about a completed action before
something in the past, form by using the
word “had” + past participle of the verb.
It expresses activities that existed or
occurred before another activity in the
past.

Subject + had + past participle = past

perfect tense.

Examples in a sentence:
1. We had finished dinner when
James called.
2. I had written the email before he
apologized.

Who among you here can give me

another example of the past perfect tense
in a sentence? (Student answered) I had
fallen asleep before eight
o’clock.
Very good. Now, let us differentiate past
tense and past perfect tense using these
examples.

A.
Past tense: I spoke
Past perfect tense: I had spoken

B.
Past tense: I worked
Past perfect tense: I had worked

Before we have our short quiz let us

have a recap first, so past tense is used to
talk about actions that happened at a
specific time in the past, an action or
series of events in the past that are now
finished. While the past perfect tense is
used when you are talking about a
completed action before something in
the past.

Any clarifications and questions

regarding our discussion for today? If
none let’s have an activity.

D. Application Now, let us have this activity called

“Guess me!” I will give the sentence and
you will identify the past tense and past
perfect tense in the sentence. Okay, Teacher.

The first sentence is, He finished the

project on time.
(Students answered in
Second, She baked fresh cookies early chorus) Finished, Teacher.
this morning.
(Students answered in
Third, She spoke with the committee. chorus) Baked, Teacher.

(Students answered in

someone I know.
(Students answered in
chorus) Had mistaken,
Teacher.
IV. Evaluation (The teacher will administer the
evaluation activity).

Now, we will be having an oral

recitation. I will be randomly selecting a
name from my class record and whoever
is called shall be the one to answer, so
you have to listen very carefully because
I will only read the question twice. Am I
understood, class? Yes, Teacher.

Great! Okay let's start, the first to recite

is... (picking a name). Define what is the
