ISTANBUL AREL UNIVERSITY


School of Vocational Studies/ Tourist Guide

Course Title: TRPM 115 Yabancı Dil İngilizce I/ Foreign Language English I

Aim: The aim of the course is to teach students basic communication skills needed to communicate in a
variety of different situations in tourism industries. Whether the student is a travel agent, a tour guide or a
hotel manager, the course will allow him or her to function effectively in English. Special emphasis is
placed on relevant vocabulary and grammatical structures used in the field of Tourism. The learner is given
the opportunity to practice using the language that he or she has acquired by means of lesson sessions, group
or pair works, and various communicative activities.

Duration: 4 hours

Description: The course is organized into three levels of difficulty and offers up to 400 vocabulary items-
terms and phrases. Every unit includes a test of reading comprehension, vocabulary and listening skills,
and leads students through written and oral production. The course constitutes a variety of realistic reading
passages, career specific dialogues, reading and listening comprehension checks, guided speaking and
written exercises, a rich vocabulary comprising terms and phrases of the related field.

Course Learning Outcomes

1. Has a basic knowledge of tourism and travel industry in English.

3. Utilizes terms in the spheres as accommodation, catering and travel in tourist guide profession.
4. Has knowledge of topics about travel agency in English.
5. Utilizes his/her vocabulary stock correctly and efficiently in sphere of tourism business.
6. Comprehends reading and listening passages in English about tourism and travel industry.
7. Follows and comprehend topics on tourism and travel industry at a certain level. Can communicate
effectively during face-to-face interactions.
8. Improves his/her knowledge in the spheres of tourism and travel industry. Translates using
terminology in the relevant sphere.

Comprehension

1. Understanding genre of a reading text, reading for details, identifying referring expressions in a
reading text, identifying facts in a reading text, guessing the meaning of unknown words;

recognizing stress on common adjectives, taking notes while listening, identifying referring
expressions in a listening text;
3. Taking turns in short talks, making suggestions, participating in a discussion and debate, giving
advice and reasons, making comparison, talking about predictions for the future;
4. Recognizing key vocabulary about tourism.
