KEY CONCEPTS OF RECREATION

1. RECREATION IS A LEISURE TIME ACTIVITY – the activity must be conducted in hours

other than work. The activity must not be associated with productive labor that is aimed at
profit that is a regular part of one’s daily routine as a means of making a living.

2. RECREATION IS AN ENJOYABLE ACTIVITY – it is something from which one gains

satisfactions, security, and happiness.

3. RECREATION IS A VOLUNTARILY ACTIVITY – the individual must have chosen, of his or

her volition, to engage in this pursuit; there must have been no coercion.

4. RECREATION IS CONSTRUCTIVE IN NATURE – it is wholesome, it should do something

to contribute to individual’s physical, social, and emotional and mental welfare.

BENEFITS OF OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
1. Physical Health
 It helps people to move.
 Being outdoors prevent a person from having a sedentary life.
 It allows people to move, like walking, running, swimming, biking, paddling,
etc.
 With the surge of electronic gadgets, more and more people (children and
adults alike) are unconsciously getting stuck with a sedentary life, contented
with playing with their computer games, tablets, or cellphones, or watching
television for hours.
Physical activities done in outdoor activities/ recreation have a positive impact on
the health of the person. Many people have documented the benefits of staying
active include reduced obesity, reduced risk disease, enhance immune system, and
increased life expectancy.
2. Psycho-Emotional Benefits
 Engaging in outdoor recreational activities helps people to rest, relax, de-
stress or unwind, and feel revitalized.
 According to the research of Katcher & Baeck, 1987 and Stilgoe, 2001, that
too much artificial stimulation and time spent in purely human environments
can cause exhaustion and loss of vitality and health.
 Research has found out that exposure to nature reduces blood pressure,
heart rate, muscle tension and the production of stress hormones.
 Being outdoor improves self-esteem, confidence and creativity
Outdoor activities contributes to one’s personal and spiritual growth. It allows an
individual to discover his/her inner spirit and sense of self, creating new behaviors
and identity.

3. Social Benefits
5
 Outdoor activities are ways for families to become closer.
 Spending time outdoors allows people to meet and interact with others who
share the same passion for outdoor recreation.
 Outdoor recreation promotes stewardship.
People feelings and connection with nature are greatest motivation for them to
care for the natural environment and advocate for its prevention.
4. Economic Benefits
 Generating Revenue
 Lowering Healthcare Costs
 Reducing Unemployment and Boosting Productivity
 Increasing Tourism
 Enhancing Property Value and Attracting New Businesses
 It brings day and overnight visitors to an area and communities reap the
economic benefits when visitors buy meals and snacks, stay overnight in hotels,
buy specialized equipment, lease land, and pay for travel costs.
Outdoor recreation/ activities attracts new business ideas and facilities to a region which
boots sales rate and increases taxable revenue. Similarly, they provide health benefits that
increase productivity and reduce government costs.

Whatever reason there may be, people engage in outdoor recreation for their own sake and
pleasure, voluntarily, and of their own choice.

What are the different outdoor recreational activities?

The Philippines is rich in natural resources. Having 7,641 islands there are many
outdoor activities that can be done. Below are some of the activities that we can do.

AQUATICS
The Philippines is home of over seven thousand islands that are spread across 300,000
kilometers. It's an excellent place to express your adventurous spirit. From rainforests to
lakes, white beaches, shipwreck sites, marine parks, and more, the Philippines has it all. There
are plenty of aquatic activities that we will enjoy in Manila, Subic, Boracay, Palawan,
Camarines Sur, Davao, Bohol, Cebu, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental and lots of
more. The subsequent are a few of the famous activities within the country.
Aquatic Activity is described as water-based activities that develop and improve
physical and mental fitness. Aquatic Fitness is usually done vertically in shallow or deep
water.

Swimming

In recreation and sports, swimming is the propulsion of the body through water by
combined arm and leg motions and the natural flotation of the body. Swimming is an
individual or team racing sport that requires using one's entire body to move through the
water. Swimming as an exercise is famous as an all-around body developer and is
particularly useful in therapy and as an exercise for physically disabled persons. It is also
taught for lifesaving purposes.

Surfing
Surfing is the sport of riding waves in an upright or prone position. Surfers catch the ocean,
river, or artificial waves and glide across the water's surface until the wave breaks and lose its
energy.

Surfing originated in the region we now call Polynesia but was the most advanced and
documented in Hawaii. Originally called wave sliding, this sport was more than just casual fun
for both genders. It had a lot of societal and spiritual meaning to the people, making it vastly
crucial to their culture.

Canoeing

Canoeing is an activity that involves paddling a canoe with a single-bladed paddle. Canoeing
is done in a small boat that is pointed at both ends and uses paddles for propulsion. It can be
done individually or with a group of people in rivers, lakes, or even water parks. In sanctioned
events, life jackets are required to be worn.

Kayaking

Kayaking is a fun activity that involves moving through water in a small water vessel with the
aid of a double-bladed paddle. It allows the boat driver to maneuver through waterways by
sitting face-forward and propelling ahead with alternating side-to-side paddle strokes. The
paddler sits in the cockpit with the legs extended beneath a closed deck, leaving the upper
body free and exposed.

Lesson 4: Cardiorespiratory Endurance and Strength Assessment for Aquatic

Activity

9
Core

The core muscles are defined as the structures that make up the lower back, the pelvis, the
hips, and the abdomen. The core is the origin of all movements and where the center of
gravity is located. An efficient core is needed to maintain proper muscle balance throughout
the entire body system. A strong core can also prevent low back pain from occurring. Studies
have shown that core training can decrease the chance of injury, less recurrence of injury,
and improved performance in athletic activities.

Upper Body Muscular Strength

Upper body muscular strength is measured by two tests: push-ups and the bend-and-pull test.
Both tests measure the functional abilities of the shoulder. Why is it important to measure the
shoulder function? Shoulder function is related to static posture and stabilizes our torso. If our
shoulders are functioning well, then our posture improves and our shoulders have better
range of motion. In addition, appropriate shoulder function is needed to avoid shoulder
injuries in the future. The push-up test measures upper body pushing activities. A push-up can
carry up to 70%
Cardiorespiratory fitness levels of numerous people have been associated with moderate-to-
high intensity exercise. Prolonged periods of moderate dynamic endurance refer to the ability
of the body to perform muscle activity. By now, you have already known several important
indicators. This is the single most important indicator of physical fitness. Cardiorespiratory
endurance
can be measured by taking one's VO₂ max or maximal oxygen consumption. The VO₂ max is
the maximum amount of oxygen that a person can use to produce energy.

Activity: Rockport Walk Test

Use the Rockport Walk Test (Activity 4.6) to determine your VO₂ max. see page 260 of
Health Optimizing Physical Education 3 and 4 textbook.

Lesson 5: Filipino Games as a Recreational Activity

Philippine Games
“Larong Pinoy”
Game – is an exercise of voluntary control systems in which there is an opposition between
forces, confined by a procedure and rules to produce a disequilibria outcome.
