                                THE PROBLEM
Background of the Study
Nowadays, social media is more or less a requisite part of our lives.
With people of all ages making use of social media, it has evolved into
something that is essential for us human beings to survive. Even various
social media accounts have lowered their age requirements to enable more
users of that certain platform. (Manuela Willbold, 2019)
One of the major benefits of social media platforms is having a much
more convenient way of communication. Take the case of, social
interactions, it is much easier to talk to your loved ones who are abroad, you
don’t have to travel far just to see them you could just video chat using
various social media platforms like Skype, Messenger or Discord. Moreover,
you could expand your business by reaching a lot people at once through
social media.
Different websites and social media platforms are also a great way for
students to acquire useful information in assisting them in their studies. It
can also be used to obtain crucial information about current affairs and latest
scientific researches. (How Social Media Improved Communication?, N.D.)
It has been perceived that many of our generation’s youth can be
easily bored when reading or writing but through the help of social media,
there are a lot more entertaining ways to learn or take in more information
about certain studies that they are often required to know. (Zachary Jason,
2017)
Furthermore, an additional benefit in using social media is utilizing it in
distance learning. Since the pandemic has cut off many of the usual methods
of learning, it has been really hard for students to catch up to the studies
required in their curriculum. However, because of online learning platforms
people are slowly adjusting to these methods.
Thus, we can conclude that social media platforms that enable free
voice and video chat, sharing of documents and presenting valuable
information can be highly effective in improving the academic performance
of students. (Cathy Li & Farah Lalani, 2020)
Simultaneously the parents of these students should be aware of the
dangers of social media, they should always make sure of the safety of their
children, It should be noted that high security must be maintained when
letting a minor use social media platforms. These are all great advice before
letting your child utilize social media for online learning. (NortonLifeLock, N.
D.)
Despite the fact that technology has evolved and made online learning
much easier, it is still acknowledged that teachers play a key role in
improving the academic performance of their students. Teachers often make
an effort to reach out to their students and understand what each of them
are going through because of this pandemic. (Stephen Merrill, 2020)
In conclusion, teens have been known to be a master of keeping
themselves busy through social media. However there have been multiple
incidents of cyberbullying and impostor syndrome. Because of these certain
dangers, students must be responsible and be well aware of the incidents
that could happen on social media. In contrast, social media still has a lot of
benefits in terms of communication and giving or receiving viable
information. (Summer Allen, 2019)
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
This research builds upon: Vroom’s Expectancy Theory by Victor Vroom
and The motivational theory by Porter and Lawler. These theories have a lot
in common as they argue that people work harder and exert more effort if
they understood that there are relationships between the effort they put in,
the performance they gain and the rewards they receive.
According to Victor Vroom’s motivational model (1964), motivational
theories also explain that the path students use to achieve a certain goal
affects the way they engage with academic tasks. It suggests that the
amount of motivation and effort a student will put into learning will depend
on expectancy, instrumentality and valence. Furthermore, according to
Porter and Lawler the view of the student on the reward they will receive
also greatly affects their academic performance.
The utilization of social media in academics have an effect to the
students themselves making it the independent variable. The academic
performance of the students will serve as the dependent variable. This will
be proven using open-ended interview guide questionnaire.
This study adopted the Input-Process-Output (IPO) model.

Statement of the Problem
The purpose of this research is to understand how social media greatly
benefits the academic performance of the students. Research on this topic
will start to reveal how social networking sites are used for academic
interactions. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
    1. Does the use of social media have an impact on the students’
       academic performance?
    2. What are the benefits of using social media as an aid to online
       classes?
    3. What is the amount of time students spend in utilizing social media in
       various academic purposes?
Scope and Delimitation
This study will focus on the students of DCNHS (Dagupan City National
High School) specifically Grade 12 students enrolled in the school year
2020-2021 from the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and
Mathematics) strand. The study will consider every aspect of the students’
utilization of social media and what advantages they gain from it. Each of the
students will be given the same questions to answer.
Significance of the Study
The findings of the study will provide deeper insight on how social media
affects the academic system
To the students, the results may serve as an eye opener on how
different life is with online classes. They now have to study alone but also
spend more time with their family
To the parents, they would understand that social media can be very
useful if it is utilized in the right manner
To the school, the outcome would improve how they handle the
academic performance of their students
To the teachers, it would be a great help to them by improving their
perception on the students’ utilization of social media for their studies

findings of this research.
                             LITERATURE REVIEW
The goal of this project is to look into the potential benefits of using
social media in the classroom. Following a thorough examination of a large
number of these online tools, it was discovered that social media has
numerous educational benefits. In fact, these web-based applications have
been found to improve communication among students as well as between
teachers and students.
Teachers and students can interact with each other in a matter of
seconds thanks to these technologies. Students' engagement can also be
boosted with the help of social media. Students who frequently complain
about being intimidated or bored in class may feel more at ease expressing
their creativity and expressing their opinions on a social networking website.
Another outcome of this study is that social media applications encourage
collaboration by allowing students to collaborate on a common goal. We
recommend that these online social tools be used in learning environments
because of their educational benefits.
The use of social media platforms has become a commonplace.
Students use them all the time, as you can see. Facebook, Wiki, YouTube,
bulletin boards, LinkedIn, blogging, and twittering are among the most
common resources. The advent of modern technology makes every effort to
meet the needs of people, especially the younger generation. How do we, as
educators, capitalize on this trend? This paper will present findings from a
research study conducted at the University of Houston's central campus in
the fall of 2009. Students' usage of various social media platforms, their
views and attitudes toward these tools, and their preferred social networking
groups were all investigated in this report. The findings show that Facebook,
Wikipedia, and YouTube are the three most used social media tools, with the
top four reasons for using them being social interaction, path
communication, pace of feedback, and relationship building.
They chose a group of civically active people with no membership
requirements, as well as a group focused on a current issue that would not
last long. The author proposed some educational implications of some of
these resources as a valuable resource for teaching and learning based on
their feedback. (Liu, Youmei, 2010)
Technology, according to Abelardo Pardo, provides a forum for
creativity by allowing users to share their feelings about the knowledge
being written. He goes on to say that social media is a medium that enables
students to engage with one another, with their teachers, and with groups
that share their educational interests. These forms of interactions, according
to Pardo, are "an important part of how humans learn." (Pardo, p. 45, 2013)
Social media tools have become ubiquitous. You can see students use
them all the time. Among them most popular tools are Facebook, Wiki,
YouTube, bulletin board, LinkedIn, blogging, and twittering. The
advancement of modern technologies tries its best to accommodate the
needs from people, especially the younger generation.
YouTube, for sharing and streaming content, and Facebook, for having
a full online identity and a network of friends, are two examples of media
outlets used by the younger generation.
There are a few advantages of using social media, according to
O'Keeffe and Clarke-Pearson of the American Academy of Pediatrics. They
agree that one of the most significant advantages of social media is that it
helps people better understand themselves by allowing them to interact with
others and become more innovative by blogging. As a result, they achieve
better results in their individual schoolwork. According to O'Keeffe and
Clarke-Pearson, another significant advantage of using social media is that it
allows students to enhance their learning by allowing them to exchange
information with one another and perform group projects more effectively
(O'Keeffe and Clarke-Pearson, 2011).
According to Napoleon Egedegbe, various researchers and scholars
have come to the same conclusion about the effect of social media on
student academic performance: “There is no impact” (Egedegbe, 2013).
                            RELATED STUDIES
Electronic communication tools are rapidly encroaching on every
aspect of life, and educational institutions have struggled for decades to
understand the function of such devices in information distribution, utility,
and interactive style. Adoption and use of mobile devices and social media
can give students with a plethora of futuristic learning opportunities,
including access to course information and engagement with peers and
professionals (Cavus & Ibrahim, 2008, 2009; Kukulska-Hulme & Shield, 2008;
Nihalani & Mayrath, 2010; Richardson & Lenarcic, 2008, Shih, 2007).
Students in higher education are pouring their acceptance of mobile
devices such as cellphones, smartphones, and tablets in Higher Education
Institutions (HEIs), according to the Educause Center for Applied Research
[ECAR] (2012) survey. Almost 67 percent of polled students agreed that
mobile devices and social media plays an important role in their academic
achievement and career improvement. Despite the physical barrier, mobile
devices and social media provides excellent educational e-learning options to
students for academic collaboration, access to course information, and
tutoring (Gikas & Grant, 2013).
The benefits of using social media and mobile devices are generally
recognized in terms of obtaining course information, video clips, and
transferring instructional notes, among other things. In general, students
believe that social media and mobile devices are the most cost-effective and
convenient ways to get pertinent information. According to studies
conducted in Western countries, using online social media for collaborative
learning has a considerable impact on students' academic performance and
satisfaction (Zhu, 2012).
Students may use social media and mobile devices to build, edit, and
distribute course content in text, video, and audio formats. These technical
advancements have resulted in the emergence of a new type of learning
community, one focused on the ideals of collaborative discovery and
interaction (Selwyn, 2012).
Students may engage with their teachers, access their course
materials, customize them, and shape student groups using social media
platforms in academic institutions (Greenhow, 2011a, 2011b).
All the studies reviewed by the researchers were considered relevant
to the present study.
