Importance of
the lab safety
• Protect of self
• Protect others
• Protect lab equipment
and facilities
Lab Safety Begins Before You Go to
the Lab!
1. lab coats must be worn at all times while in the laboratory.
This rule must be followed whether you are actually working
on an experiment or simply writing in your lab notebook.
2. Contact lenses are not allowed. various fumes may
accumulate under the lens and cause serious injuries or
blindness.
3. Closed toe shoes and long pants must be worn in the lab.
Sandals and shorts are not allowed.
4. Long hair must be tied back when using open flames

Most important clothing that need on the lab
Lab Coat Goggles
Gloves
Safe Lab Practices
Eating, drinking are strictly
prohibited in the lab
No unauthorized experiments
are to be performed.
Never taste anything.
Never directly smell the source of any vapor
or gas.

Safe Lab Practices 2
Never pipette chemicals by mouth.
Always wash your hands before
leaving the lab

In case of an emergency…
• Know the locations of:
• fire extinguisher
• fire blanket
• body shower
• eyewash

• If you spill a harmful chemical eye/face wash
on yourself or in your eyes,
start rinsing immediately,
wash it 15 min. and send your
partner to get teacher’s help

Protect Yourself
Hand Safety
• If a chemical spills on your skin, notify the
teacher and rinse with water for 15 minutes
• Wash hands after every lab
• Handle
glassware,
sharp tools
and heated
containers
carefully

Sharp Objects
• Notify teacher if you get cut.
• Broken glass and sharp objects do not go
in trash cans.
• Teacher will clean up broken glass.
15
Chemical Safety
• Read all labels twice before removing
a chemical from the container.
• Only use the type and
amount of chemical
instructed to use.
• Never touch, taste, or
smell a chemical unless
instructed by the teacher.
• Never mix chemicals
unless instructed to do so.

Chemical Safety
• Transfer chemicals carefully!
• Keep lids on chemical containers when not in
use
• When diluting an acid, pour the
acid into water.
• Consider all chemicals dangerous.

Safe Lab Practices 3
Consider all chemicals to be hazardous unless you are instructed otherwise.
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available in lab for all chemicals in use.
These will inform you of any hazards and precautions of which you should be
aware.
19
Chemicals Labeling
• The two major systems of chemical hazard labeling are NFPA (National Fire
Protection Agency) and HMIG (Hazardous Material Information Guide).
• Each uses the same color and number codes, but each lays the label out in a
different manner,
NFPA uses four diamonds
HMIG uses vertically stacked bars
Rated on a 0-4 basis.
If, for example, ether
is present, a very
high rating of 4 would
be indicated.

14
6/20/2022
Flammable: Store in area segregated for flammable reagents.
Health hazard: Toxic if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through skin. Store in secure area.
Reactive and oxidizing reagents: May react violently with air, water or other substances.
Store away from flammable and combustible materials.
Corrosive: May harm skin, eyes, mucous membrane. Store away from red-, yellow- and blue-
coded reagents.
Presents no more than moderate hazard in any of the categories above. For general chemical
storage (green or orange are used)
Stripes: Incompatible with other reagents of the same color code. Store separately.
