INTERACTIONS IN THE ECOSYSTEM
I. Overview
Ecosystem is a community of living and non-living things interacting, not only among
themselves, but also with their environment. It can be terrestrial or aquatic.
Habitats are the living things’ natural homes. Seas and oceans, forests and deserts are
habitats living things are adapted or adjusted to their habitats.
II. Intended Learning Outcomes:
a. identify ecosystem;
b. examine the interactions that happen among living thing and non-living things in an ecosystem;

Good days kids! How are you?
For this day, you will learn about the interactions in the ecosystem.
Interactions in the Ecosystem
Living things live in different habitats. Habitats are their homes. Seas and oceans are
habitats; so are forests and deserts. Living things are adapted or adjusted to their habitats. A habitat
is not just home to them, it is also what provides them with all their needs. A habitat can be an
actual place. The family of cactus plants may consider the desert its habitat. A flea, on the other
hand, can be consider its host, which can be a dog or a cat, its natural habitat as well.
An ecosystem is a community of living and non-living things interacting, not only among
themselves. Most ecosystem have these non-living elements: water, air, sunlight, soil and rocks. It is
also made up of living things like plants, small organisms, insects and other animals. People are part
of an ecosystem. Ecosystem can be terrestrial and can be aquatic. Terrestrial is an ecosystem that
exists on land while aquatic is an ecosystem that exists in water.
Interaction in an ecosystem
All parts of the ecosystem have a role to play. For example, the non-living parts, water, air
and sunlight enable plants to make their food. Plants, on the other hand, provide food both for
animals and people.
Refer to the picture of a food chain on page 182. See how sunlight, air and water make the
grass grow. Grass can then serve as food to a grasshopper. The grasshopper becomes food for a
shrew. But, a shrew can be eaten by a hawk. A dead hawk can be eaten by fungi, which are
decomposers or those that are dead organisms. They are also important part of the ecosystem
because they keep the environment free from the harmful effects of dead organisms.
The food chain show how energy is transferred from one part of the ecosystem to another.
It is also shows how this community of living and no-living things sustain one another in an
environment. Ecosystem balances nature.
Disturbances in the Ecosystem
An ecosystem has many parts. A problem experienced in any of its parts will cause a
problem to the entire community.
Bad weather conditions which cause flooding and extreme heat will disturb entire
ecosystem. However, it is man’s activities that are more dangerous and harmful for the ecosystem.
Illegal fishing, deforestation, pollution and use too much fertilizers are just some of those activities.
The Role of People in an Ecosystem
Man is the only one in the ecosystem who can do something to stop the damage, because
he has the ability to think and do what is right and wrong.
Here are some ways:
Do not throw trash in rivers and waterways. They all end up in seas and oceans and will
cause damage to the coral reefs, which are the natural habitats of fish.
Do not burn or cut plants or even trees. Many of them are natural habitats of birds, insects
and many organisms. Cutting trees will render the living things mentioned, homeless.
Do nut burn trash. Do not use firecrackers. Minimize the use of sprays like insecticides or
hair sprays. These damage the environment and cause global warming. High temperatures
kill plants and animals.
As a kid, what are your ways to stop the damages in our ecosystem?
V. Learning Activity/Supplementary Activity
On your book, answer page 186 (letter A).
VI. Generalization
For the summary of the lesson, refer on your book, page 187.
VII. Assessment
Put a check if the statement shows proper ways on how to stop damage in ecosystem and
cross if not.
______ 1. Luisa throw her plastic bottle in the water.
______ 2. Father cut trees for his furniture business.
______ 3. The kid throws his trash in the trash can.
______ 4. The students used recycled materials for their project.
______ 5. Reyes family celebrated New year eve without fireworks or firecrackers.
