Consider the sentences below.

a- Kirsi is neither Algerian nor American.


B- You can have either a pc or a camera for your birthday, not both of them.
C- Both Kirsi and Amel are sixteen years old. Neither of them goes out on weekends
D- You can park on either sides of the street.

Isolation:
Aim: To isolate the language point to be dealt with

Task1:  Complete the table from the sentences above.


Keys: 

Right side or left side Kirsi doesn't go and Amel doesn't go

Analysis:
Aim: To analyse both form and meaning.

 Have a look at the table above and say what you notice.
 What do they express?
 Can you express them differently? What do you notice?
 What is the title of our lesson?

Keys:
 We have double conjunctions in all the sentences.
 They express addition, double negation, and choice.
 Kirsi is 16 and Amel is 16. You can park on the right side of the street. You
can park on the left side of the street. Conjunctions avoid repetition.
 The title of the lessons is: double negation and choice.

Stating the rule: Both/neither…nor/either…or


Both/neither…nor/either…or
Aim: enabling the Ls to discover the rule.

Task:  Complete the following rule.

Keys:

Form and Meaning: We use double conjunctions such us:

Both…and…/ Both of…: are used to talk about two things that are the same.

Neither…nor…/neither of: are used to express double negation. The verb is


affirmative.

Either…or…/either of…: are used to express choice.

Note: When we use of we generally need pronouns (these, those, my, your, them, us) or
article the, etc. We never use both + negative: we use neither instead.

Task1p34:  Join the following pairs of sentences using the right conjunction.

1- Hicham is not late for class. Fatima is not late for class.
2- Farid likes learning languages. Fouad likes learning languages.
3- Our classroom is clean. Our classroom is beautiful.
4- I don't smoke. I don't play cards.
5- We can leave today. We can leave tomorrow.
6- I like swimming and my sister likes swimming.
7- You look ill today. You need to have a rest. You need to see a doctor.

Keys:

1- Neither Hicham nor Fatima is/are late for class.


2- Both Farid and Fouad like learning languages.
3- Our classroom is both clean and beautiful.
4- I neither smoke nor play cards.
5- We can leave either today or tomorrow.
6- Both of us like swimming. Either of us likes swimming.
