IS PERSONAL HYGIENE SIGNIFICANT OR NOT?
Introduction
Personal hygiene is the term for behaviors that promote cleanliness and health maintenance. Hair
trimming, shaving, brushing teeth, taking regular showers, and nail clipping are a few examples
of personal hygiene activities. The improper practice of these things can cause diseases and toxic
substances that affect the body's physical, mental, and functional states. The other sides there are
many experts and practitioners whom believe that dirtying the body also has many benefits, it
helps the body to adapt quickly with invading germs.
Personal hygiene is something that everyone has, but some people are better at it than others. To
avoid standing out due to offensive odors emanating from the body or clothing, it is important to
maintain clean body hair and teeth, as well as use mouthwash and deodorants as needed. The
aforementioned should all be done in line with the conventions of your family, community, and
culture. The goal is to blend in as much as possible and avoid standing out due to poor care for
the body, clothing, or things that are generally close to you.
Personal hygiene is incredibly important, but it's also crucial to avoid engaging in these
behaviors excessively, as that can be just as problematic as not practicing good hygiene. Personal
hygiene is important, while some researchers and practitioners believe dirt is good.
The following text I will tell you the things that supporting my argument and also other things
that are against it.
Supporting arguments: Personal hygiene aids in maintaining a person's overall health and
physical appearance.
Skin care: having beautiful skin is an extension of one's personality. It is one of the sensory
system's more delicate organs. It serves a variety of purposes, including sensitization, irritation
by dangerous microorganisms, protection from dust and sunshine, sweat secretion, etc. Each
person produces a strong perspiration odor that needs to be cleaned up properly to prevent it
from turning foul-smelling. It also causes different microbial infections, like bacterial, viral,
fungal, and parasitic infections.
According to professors at the University of Malaysia Pahang (Noor & Noor Azida Sahabudin,
2018), the skin care regimen is a procedure for caring for the skin. Making sure the skin is
healthy and in good shape through this procedure is crucial. Depending on the type of skin,
various regimens must be considered. Knowing your skin's health and symptoms is necessary to
determine your skin type. Thus, if a person has little skin understanding, it may be tough for
them to examine their skin type. The skin type can be identified using a variety of criteria,
including gender, age, sleeping patterns, and skin disorders. There are four classifications for
skin types: dry, oily, normal, and combination.
Skin-care regimen: Skin type determination is important because there are four skin types:
normal, oily, dry, and combo. Skin routine the goal of the skin regimen is to keep the skin clean.
Cleanse, moisturize day and night, and treat once a week are the fundamental regimens. For each
type of skin, there are several skin care regimens. Many chemical components have been used in
skin care products. Depending on the kind of skin, some chemicals can have negative side effects
while others have positive ones. A system supporting a skin care regimen to assist the public in
determining their skin type and providing them with guidance on selecting the best skin care
products has been developed. In addition, the suggested solution offered advice on the proper
skin care regimen for each skin type as well as information on which chemicals in skin care
products should be used and which ones should be avoided.
Maintaining your hands and nails is important because our hands are the tools that we use for
all our hard labor. When completing any manual work, the hands come into contact with a range
of things, including furniture, windows, books, money, tapping seats, walls, soil, dogs and other
domestic animals, silverware, and more. All of these objects might contain germs that stick to
our hands and subsequently spread to different parts of our bodies. Having filthy hands can lead
to a number of serious health problems.
According to the CDC (2022), washing your hands frequently is one of the best ways to prevent
you and your loved ones from becoming ill. This is especially important during these times when
you are most prone to touching and transferring germs. Prior to, during, and after meal
preparation, both before and after a meal, Before and after providing at-home medical care for a
sick person who is vomiting or has diarrhea, Before and after a cut or wound has been treated,
After a bathroom visit, after performing nappy changes or tidying up a youngster who has
urinated, After sneezing, coughing, or blowing your nose, After coming into contact with animal
manure or animal feed, After handling pet treats, food, or garbage. so If soap and water are not
easily accessible, wash your hands using a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
Hair maintenance: regular hair washing and combing is necessary to keep it clean and clear of
parasites like lice. Dandruff and lice are the two most frequent and serious problems with hair.
According to Rees (2023), there are numerous variations of hair, such as straight, curly, wavy,
and coily. A person's hair type may require them to adhere to varied care requirements.
General hair care advice: the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) suggests that people
try the following when taking care of their hair: Use shampoo to wash your hair as often as
necessary, use conditioner to dry the hair, and also use a wide-toothed comb to brush it.
Teeth and gum care, also known as the maintenance of teeth and gums, dental caries, also
known as tooth decay, and gum bleeding are highly common dental issues. These issues may
result in foul breath, gum bleeding, pyorrhea, and tooth loss. Our diet is the biggest contributor to
tooth decay. Food fragments that are eaten end up in the space between our teeth. It creates an
ideal environment between the teeth for the growth of decay-causing bacteria, which leads to
tooth decay.
Frank and Jennifer Berry (2019) said that good oral hygiene is necessary to keep teeth and gums
healthy. The following are some best practices that can keep teeth and gums healthy: Brush
regularly but not aggressively, use fluoride, floss once a day, See a dentist regularly. Do not
smoke. Consider mouthwash. Limit sugary foods and starches, and drink water instead of sugary
drinks.
Maintain Caring for your ears and eyes because they are such delicate sensory organs, the
eyes require special attention. The following safety steps can help maintain healthy eyes:
Everyone should get frequent eye exams, but especially kids. Any illness should be treated
immediately if it is found. A book page must be at least 12 feet away and at an angle between
45° and 70° when being read. When handling sharp objects like knives and blades, be cautious
and Wear safety glasses.
Ear maintenance: because the ear is such a delicate sensory organ, it requires special attention.
Don’t use high-pitched sounds while listening to earphones; visit an otolaryngology doctor. Care
for your feet: Numerous actions can be taken to maintain the health of your feet. If you are a
diabetic patient, check your feet, be more energetic, Inquire with your doctor if Medicare will
cover special footwear. Every day, wash your feet. Dry them carefully, paying specific attention
to the space in between your toes.
Against arguments: Gilbert and Rob Knight (2017) wrote the book Dirt is Good and said
microbiomes are upending long-held beliefs about health. Our houses and communities are home
to microbiomes, the invisible communities of microbes that dwell on, in, and around us. In order
to aid in their children's growth, parents have a variety of microbe-related inquiries that are laid
forth in the book Dirt is Good. Drs. Jack Gilbert and Rob Knight describe recent concepts and
new areas of research into how bacteria may affect health, particularly for children, drawing
from their broad expertise as healthcare specialists, researchers, and parents themselves. Children
are exposed to germs for the rest of their lives, from the moment they are born. Their immature
immune systems must learn to distinguish between potentially helpful and harmful bacteria.
Indicators of immunological function, such as fewer allergies, have been linked in studies to
early exposure to domesticated animals and soil. The "hygiene hypothesis" asserts that extremely
sterile environments can't trigger the body's defenses, which ultimately makes our bodies more
vulnerable. Early contact with a variety of microbes promotes immunity. Urban homes, offices,
and public spaces, according to studies on the microbial landscape of the built environment, are
predominantly home to human dead skin bacteria that are not very dangerous but are not
particularly helpful for developing healthy microbiomes or immune systems. It may be possible
to bring part of the outdoors, with beneficial bacteria, inside by cutting back on overly sterilizing
buildings and introducing indoor plants and animals. While concentrating on individual
parenting decisions, Dirt is Good has valuable lessons for biophilic city development. To
maintain a healthy immune system, people, especially young children, need exposure to a wide
variety and abundance of microbes. Experiencing the outdoors, particularly in natural and
agricultural settings, helps spread such bacteria. It turns out that encouraging healthy "germs"
may be another significant, if sometimes unnoticed, advantage of urban farms, living walls, and
other biophilic practices. Even though we may not fully understand microbiomes at this point,
scientific studies are accumulating proof that the healthy bacteria in our environment improve
our wellbeing and that yes, dirt is good for us.
Conclusion
Personal hygiene, or cleansing, is one of the fundamental public health practices that contributes
to reducing the spread of disease and also contributes to overall personal health. Lastly, I
emphasize the argument that says personal hygiene is significant.
