<Insert Name of School> Student Council
Charter
Introduction
The Student Council of <insert name of school> is a group of students elected by their
classmates to represent their views and interests. We are committed to promoting the principles
of the school’s ethos and ensuring that every student's voice is heard. Our aim is to create a
school community that is inclusive, respectful, caring and democratic. We respect and protect
children’s rights, as outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and our Student
Council endeavours to ensure that Student Voice is heard and valued in all aspects of school life.
Elections
The Student Council will consist of one Class Rep and one Sub from each class from <insert
class levels/groups>. Elections will be held annually in October, and every student in the above-
mentioned classes will have the opportunity to vote.
The elections will be in the form of a secret ballot in which students can vote for three students
(1 beside their first choice, 2 beside their second choice and 3 beside their third choice). Votes
will be cast into a ballot box and the Staff Rep on the Student Council will collect and count the
votes. The Staff Rep will share the list of elected council members with the school principal and
then announce the results for each class.
Term of Office
The Student Council is elected in October and remains in place until the next council is elected
the following October.
The Student Council Members will be recognised and thanked at the final assembly of the school
year. They will be presented with a certificate in recognition of their contribution to the school
and commitment to representing their peers.
The outgoing Student Council Members (except for the members who graduated at the end of the
school year) will meet in October, before the elections take place, and will be given the
opportunity to sign up as a Student Council Advisor for the new/incoming Student Council
Members if they are interested in helping the new council. Advisors may also be invited to be
involved in special events for the Student Council and/or school.
Students can be elected to the Student Council for up to two terms of service during their time at
<insert name of school>.
Meetings
The Student Council will meet once a fortnight, or as needed. Meetings will be chaired by one
member of the council each time they meet. This duty will be rotated amongst members of the
council who are interested in doing so. Minutes of each meeting will be taken and read at the
start of the next meeting.
Being a Role Model
As members of the Student Council, we are expected to be role models for our peers. We will
lead by example, demonstrating respect, kindness, and inclusivity in all that we do. We will also
encourage our classmates and staff to do the same.
Responsibilities as a Student Council Member
As members of the Student Council, we have several responsibilities, including:
Representing the views and interests of our classmates
Attending Student Council meetings and contributing to discussions
Liaising with our classmates and reporting back to them on the work of the Student
Council
Working on initiatives and projects that promote the values of the Educate Together ethos
Supporting the school in creating an inclusive, respectful, and democratic community
Respecting and protecting children’s rights within our school community.
In the unlikely situation that a Student Council member is deemed to not be fulfilling their duties
and responsibilities, or are involved in sustained low-level behavioural incidents and/or any
serious behavioural incident (as outlined in the school’s Code of Conduct/Behavioural policy),
they will be required to step down from their position on the Student Council. If this is the case
for a Class Rep, the Substitute Class Rep will take on the role of Class Rep and a new sub will be
announced based on the original election results. If this is the case for a Substitute Class Rep, a
new sub will be announced based on the original election results.
Staff Involvement in the Student Council
A Staff Rep will be included in Student Council meetings. They will provide guidance and
support to the Student Council members, and help to ensure that the work of the Student Council
aligns with the school's overall vision and values. The Staff Rep is a member of the council, not
the ‘head’, ‘boss’ or ‘leader’ of the Student Council. The Staff Rep will help to facilitate
communication between the ‘Leadership and Management Team’ and the Student Council and
will bring ideas from the Student Council to L.M.T. Meetings.
Conclusion
The Student Council plays a vital role in our school community, ensuring that every student has
a voice and promoting the values of the school ethos. We are committed to working together to
create a safe, inclusive, and democratic school environment where everyone is respected and
valued. We look forward to representing our classmates, collaborating with staff and parents, and
making a positive impact on our school and community.
