It’s 8:00 am on a brisk Monday in September. I’m sitting in English class, about

to fall asleep when I hear my name from across the room. It’s the teacher

calling, my head shoots up!

1
- Strangers might risk their life to save you.
2
Mrs. Racheal: Yes Emma! What’s the answer!

Me: I-uh…Umm. What was the question?

Mrs. Racheal: sighs. Nevermind …

I awkwardly shuffle in my seat. All eyes are on me…

3
Mrs. Racheal: Ok! Now lets get into.

Her voice slowly fades out as I drift off into my head…

RING! RING!

My head pops up with the loud noise piercing my ears. I almost jump out of my

seat and join everyone in the line outside of the classroom. We get into the

hallway and the smell of smoke fills our lungs. This is when we realize.

This is not a drill…

We all start running down the never-ending hallway. The exit never seems to

get any closer. Someone’s foot knocks me down and I tumble to the ground

with a hard SMASH against the hard tiled floor. I shut my eyes tight as students

and teachers topple over me. No one stops to help. The pounding on my back

stops and silence fills the hall. Everyone is outside. Everyone but me… I’m
4
stuck inside, unable to move, with a sharp pain running down my spine. Icollect

enough strength to turn on my back and sit up. My heart drops as I see the

flames charging down the hallway towards me, engulfing everything in its

orange glowing light. It’s almost relaxing to watch it. I get startled by

something hitting my hand, they’re my tears.

Slowly I drop down to the ground, accepting my fate, ready to be swallowed into

the fiery wall heading my way. Tears are streaming down my face as I hear
5
something. A door? I turn my head around and see light behind me. Light! I

see light!!! I try to stand up but I immediately fall hard onto the cold ground.

But then I hear footsteps. I look up and see someone. I can’t see through my

watery eyes.

“Get up! Come on!” The mysterious voice says,

I stutter. “What? Who are y-”

“-No time! Grab my hand!” They say urgently.

6
I use all of my remaining strength to lift myself up and grab their hand. They

pull me up and wrap my arm around their shoulder. We both slowly walk
7
towards the exit. The fire catching up fast from behind. I trip and fall out of the
8
strangers arms. I lay on the ground, heart racing, the fire right behind me. I

start to wail, thinking that I probably won’t be going home today.

“Go! Leave me!” I yell trying to save whoever risked their life.

The flames surround me as I break into a deep sweat. The fire is heating up the

tiles where they’re burning my feet. I think about everything I took for granted

and how I would do anything to be at home with my mom, dad, and sister. Then

I start to see black. Not at once, but slowly, everything far away turns black.

Everything starts to fall into the black void. The fire fades out and so do the

blue and white tiles on the ground. Everything is dark. I don’t remember

anything after that.

I slowly open my eyes into the bright room. I immediately notice a serious pain

coming from all around my body, I look down and see burns covering my arms,

legs, and torso. The pain is so immense that I’m forced to shut my eyes tight.

“Squeeeeeeeek!” The door opens and my eyes swing open trying to see who it
10
is. There is no one, instead I see a bunch of medical supplies, including a

repetitive beep of the heart monitor. A nurse walks in and sits down next to me,

not noticing that my eyes are open. She pulls out a clipboard and starts writing

stuff down, the slight squeak of her pencil is just enough to make me cringe. I

can tell that she isn’t too worried about me. That’s a good sign, she grasps her

pen lightly and starts to right, it’s almost mesmerizing watching her,
