Take Accurate Measurements

For a tailored jacket, you need to have a clear understanding of the fit in several key areas:

 Shoulder: The shoulder seam should line up with the natural shoulder edge.
 Chest: The jacket should fit comfortably around the chest without being too tight or too
loose.
 Waist: A slight taper at the waist is ideal for a fitted look.
 Sleeve Length: The sleeve should end just above the wrist bone.
 Jacket Length: The jacket’s length should be proportionate to your body—generally, it
should cover the top of your hips and no lower than mid-thigh.

3. Fitting the Jacket to Your Body

Put on the jacket and stand in front of a mirror to assess the fit. Make sure the jacket's shoulders
are sitting correctly, the chest fits without pulling, and the waist area isn't too loose. Pin the
jacket in place where you need adjustments.

A. Shoulder Fit

 Too wide: If the shoulders of the jacket are too wide, the seam will sit off your natural
shoulder. To adjust, you’ll need to take in the shoulder seam.
o How to adjust: Unpick the shoulder seam, and carefully remove some of the
fabric from each shoulder to bring the seams closer in. Re-sew the seam and press
it flat.
 Too tight: If the shoulders are too tight, it’s harder to fix. You may need to remove the
lining, add extra fabric (if available), or even replace the sleeves. This is a more complex
alteration and might require the help of a professional tailor.

B. Chest and Waist Fit

 Take in the sides: If the jacket is loose around the chest or waist, pin the sides to your
desired fit.
o How to take in the sides: Use a seam ripper to carefully undo the side seams. Pin
the jacket at the side seams to take in excess fabric (usually by 1 to 2 inches on
each side). Mark the line with chalk or a fabric marker, then sew along the new
seam.
o Press the seams flat once sewn.
 Letting out the jacket: If you need to let out the jacket because it’s too tight, check if
there’s enough fabric in the seam allowances. If there is, carefully unpick the seams and
add a bit of extra space.

C. Jacket Length

If the jacket is too long or short, you can easily adjust the length by working on the hem.

 How to shorten: Turn the jacket inside out and measure how much needs to be removed
from the bottom hem. Use a ruler to mark an even line around the jacket. Carefully cut
the excess fabric, leaving a 1-inch allowance for the hem. Fold the hem, pin it, and sew it
in place.
 How to lengthen: If the jacket is too short and there’s fabric to spare, undo the hem and
re-hem to the desired length.
