Prompt 5: What has caused the rise in partisan polarization in U.S. politics?
How does party
polarization affect society?
Polarization of politics in the United States can be attributed to several factors, which
are ideological shifts, media shifts, and demographic shifts. They have shifted from their
original positions on the key debates of the time, including healthcare reform, immigration,
and climate change. This shift is attributed to the fact that the internal factions in each party
are tilting towards the fringes. Partisan media further exacerbate the polarization because they
are more inclined to provide skewed information and coverage that regularly polarizes voter
preferences and solidifies divides. Similarly, various demographic factors like the race and
ethnicity of the voters have altered the nature of party systems’ campaigning since each party
targets a different demographic group (Pew Research Center, 2014).
This polarizing shift has important consequences. One significant effect on this is
legislative stalemate because political executives can no longer make deals on vital issues,
hence failing to address national issues of concern (Pew Research Center, 2014). On the
social level, polarization has led to an increase in people's loyalty to their political parties and
a decrease in tolerance for any differences in opinion. This growing polarization can disrupt
human bonds: friends and families can turn against one another, and coworkers can confront
each other over political disputes. Moreover, it leads to the distrust of the relevant authorities
and undermines the foundations of people’s unity, which is essential for dealing with the
issues faced by the state.
Question for classmates: In what ways can political polarization be reduced to create more
productive discourse and cooperation in U.S. politics?
