Types of Media
There are three types of media: Print Media (1); Broadcast Media (2); and New Media (3). Learn their
differences below.
a. Print Media: This type of media consists of paper and ink, reproduced in a printing process that is
traditionally mechanical.
2 Kinds of Print Media
a. Text Media: A simple and flexible format for conveying ideas, whether handwritten or printed
(e.g., books, handwritten letters, newspapers, etc.). One key feature of print media in text form is
typography.
What is typography? Typography refers to the art and technique of arranging the visual
component of the written word; features textual designs with optical illusions to improve
readability and help convey meaning.

b. Visual Media: Pictures, photos, images, and graphics used to channel communication using the
sense of sight (e.g., web illustrations, editorial cartoons, drawings, billboard, magazine cover,
photographs, infographics, etc.). One key feature of print media in visual form is graphic design.
What is a graphic design? A graphic design refers to the process of visual communication that
organizes and presents information creatively for a particular purpose.
b. Broadcast Media: This type of media reaches target audiences using airwaves as the transmission
medium (e.g., radio, voice recorder, and television).
2 Kinds of Broadcast Media
a. Audio Media: Uses audio or voice recording as a medium in the delivery of information to
appeal to the auditory sense.
b. Multimedia: Concerned with computer-controlled integration of different media types where
every information can be stored, communicated, and handled digitally.
c. New Media: This term is used to integrate the different technologies emerging on one digital platform
to organize and distribute content (e.g., podcasts, websites like wikis and blog sites, AR or augmented
reality, online games, metaverse, VR or virtual reality platforms, etc.).
II. Media Convergence
Media Convergence refers to the merging of different equipment and tools for producing and
distributing news through digitization and computer networking. It allows media to be produced and
distributed on multiple devices, also called as technological convergence. However, it is important to note
that media convergence only occurs when the synergy of communication, content, and computing in the
digital world merges into one or when they overlap one another.
3Cs of Media Convergence
Content: The information, stories, or entertainment being shared across
different media platforms (e.g., text, audio, video, images).
Communication: The interaction and exchange of information between
individuals or groups using various media technologies.
Computing: The digital technologies and devices that enable the creation,
distribution, and consumption of media content (e.g., smartphones, computers,
and the internet).
Examples of Media Convergence:
Field Examples
Communication Social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, etc.
Education Learning Management Systems such as Moodle, Google Classroom, Edmodo, etc.
Advertising Digitalized print ads across different platforms
News News agencies such as CNN, Inquirer, etc.
Entertainment Multimedia personalities such as Oprah, Kanye West, Vice Ganda, etc.
