WELCOME
As coaches, we know that there are many things that contribute to a young
soccer player’s success. Our job becomes one of identifying where individual players (
as well as our team) are at in terms of their developmental abilities and then choosing
the right activities to help them improve their skills. When I say “good activities” I mean
ones that are fundamentally sound, keep the kids moving, develop good habits, and
make them think about the game as a whole. This book provides you with 180 activities
designed to work on warming-up, dribbling, passing, receiving, communicating, spacing,
supporting, possessing, passing, conditioning, heading, goal keeping, finishing,
defending, offending, and many other techniques and tactics.
I feel these activities are suitable because they’ve been tried and tested by many
soccer coaches and teams. You’ll notice that this is a collection of material gathered
from my experience as a coach, my summer soccer camp experiences, talking with
other coaches, and from coaches who subscribe to my soccer newsletter available at
finesoccer.com.
I hope you find these activities helpful, fun, and effective in achieving your desire
to have the best team you can have. As you begin to try them, I would enjoy hearing
your feedback regarding which ones you found most helpful as well as the ones the
kids liked to do the most.

To make the most of practice time, getting organized quickly for drills is
essential. One thing I’ve noticed is that when players are asked to get into small groups
for a particular activity friends will always look for friends to practice with, while some of
the kids are left out or left to be assigned to groups by the coach. Because I strongly
believe that all players should feel a part of the team, here is a trick I use to get going
quickly and to build team unity at the same time.
I call this method the numbers game. I use it as a season long game. Whenever I
call out a number, the players must get into groups of that number as soon as possible.
Whoever isn’t in a group “loses”. For example, if there are 16 players at the training
session and I call out “4” the players will quickly get into 4 groups of 4. However, if I call
out 3, they will get into 3 groups of 5 and one person “loses.” When I first introduce the
game, I give the kids some examples of consequences for the loser. For example, she
might have to do 5 push-ups or 5 donkey kicks. Players learn very quickly that
whenever they hear me call out a number that they need to grab whomever is closest to
them without regard for whether they are an old friend or a new friend.
This is also a great way to get players to work together with different teammates
throughout a training session or season. It even works in large numbers ( if you want to
split 16 players into groups of 11 and 5, just yell 11 and those 11 become the first group
right away. If a player wants to be in the group of 11 they will do so and if they don’t that
is her decision. This is a great way to find out who wants to do things because the
players will frequently figure out what you are thinking with the numbers and will get into
the bigger group to participate.
Sometimes I will assign players into groups, but most often I will yell out the
number and let the players do it, which saves time and avoids potential conflicts. Next
time you need to break your players into teams, play the numbers game and see how
many potential problems are avoided.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on possession,
penetration, movement and communication and can be found below.
This activity uses a 40 x 30 grid with the length split into quarters. There are a total of 16
players split into two teams. There are 4 players from a team in one of the outside quarters and
also on an inside quarter. Each team starts with one ball. See diagram below for a better
understanding.
Each team starts by passing the ball amongst their teammates in their own grid.

The red team will also be looking to make a penetrating pass to a red player in the middle
quadrant. At the same time, the yellow team is looking to make a penetrating pass to their
middle quadrant.

A team gets a point for every successful penetrating pass. They lose a point for every
unsuccessful penetrating pass (one that goes out of play or to the other team). If the opposing
team wins the ball on the through ball, they get a point. On this loss of possession, the ball
does get returned to the original team.
The players on the outside quadrants have a relatively easy time as their job is to pass for
possession and look to penetrate with the pass. The players on the inside quadrants have a
much more difficult time because while some of them are looking to receive penetrating
passes, others are looking to prevent them from the opponent.
For an advanced group, you can add a defender inside the two outside quadrants to make the
possession difficult as well.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on quick
organization in attack and defense.
This activity has a 40 x 30 grid with two full sized goals, a keeper in each goal, and two teams
of either 4 or 6 per team. The teams start with equal numbers in their two defensive corners.
A server plays the ball into play and the first player from each line begins play.

These players stay on the field until a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play. When a goal is
scored, or the ball goes out of play, the players on the field leave the field and are replaced by
the next players in line.
This is an extremely fast moving game that requires communication, hard work and is a lot of
fun.
Next, you can add two players from each team on opposite sides of midfield.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on attacking at
speed and defensive recovery runs, and fitness.
The field is 30 x 30 (size can vary) with full sized goals on each end. There is a keeper in each
goal and 2 v 2 on the field. There are extra players next to the goal the teams are attacking.
The ball starts with the yellow teams keeper and as soon as he puts the ball in play (putting
the ball on the ground or throwing or kicking the ball), the game is live. Two yellow players
attack and the two red players on the field defend. Also, the first red in line joins in and
becomes the third defender.

The first inclination is for the new player to try to chase the ball down but instead, he should
recover behind the other two defenders to become the supporting player.
When the ball changes possession (either from a shot, bad pass or some other turnover) the
ball goes to the red keeper and one of the two original yellow red players leaves the field and
when the ball is put in play, a yellow player adds on.
The keepers should try to get the ball in play quickly and try to penetrate with the first pass to
negate the recovering runner.
The runners should try to get back quickly to provide proper support.
The first defenders should try to delay to allow the recovery runner time to recover.
The attackers should go at speed to not allow the defending team to get into a numbers up
situation.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on possession,
penetration and finishing.
Start a field 60 x 44. There is a goal 15 yards in from each end line and a keeper in goal. There
are two attacking players and one defending player for each goal and 4 v 4 in the middle.
The players in the middle are working to maintain possession of the ball. They need to make
three consecutive passes before they can play a penetrating pass. Once they have made their
three consecutive passes, they can pass the ball to one of the target players in their attacking
zone.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on quick passing
and movement off the ball.
This game can be played with anything from 5 to 22 players. The number of players will affect
the size of the field. As an example, I'm going to use 12 players in a 25 x 25 grid.
There are 2 teams of 5 and 2 neutral players. One team starts on offense so they have the ball
and the 2 neutral players.
This is a regular game of possession keep away except that the defenders win the ball by
tagging an opponent who has the ball or by intercepting a pass.
The tag is made with the hand to any part of the body. If a player gets tagged with possession
of the ball, the ball goes to the other team.
If the team with possession makes 5 consecutive passes without losing possession or getting
tagged, they get a point.
You can play this game to a time limit or to a number of points (for example, first team with 5

points wins).
The defending team can't play pure man to man defense because the neutral players give the
attacking team a numbers up situation so defensively they work on communication and
offensively, players have to pass quickly and move without the ball.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on spreading the
field in the attack.
This game can be played with different numbers and different size fields so everything can be
adapted based on what is available and what is needed. In this example, it's going to be an 8 v
8 game on a 60 x 50 field with two goals.
In the middle of the field is a 30 x 20 area. There are keepers in each goal.
The rules are quite simple, only 2 attacking players are allowed in the middle at any one time.
As many defenders are allowed in the middle as the defending team wants.
So, if yellow has the ball, only two yellows are allowed in the middle while red can have as
many players as they want.

As soon as red wins the ball, they must get wide so that only 2 reds are in the middle and
yellow can have more players join the middle.
There are other options you could add to this game. When yellow loses the ball and then wins
it back, the players who were in the middle must leave the middle and two new players can go
to the middle. Or, if you want the team to work through a specific center midfielder you could
put in the condition that this specific player (or players) must receive the ball before the team
can go to goal.
Not only does this work on spreading the field by going wide but it also encourages the team
to go deep (back or forward) although you would play using the regular offside rule
This is a great way to work on spreading the field as well as many other aspects of the game.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on possession
and combination play.
Start with a 30 x 20 grid with a neutral player on each end line. It's a 2 v 2 game in the middle
with one ball.
The players in the middle try to keep possession of the ball while also trying to pass the ball to
one of the neutral players on the outside. They get a point each time a pass is made to a
neutral player and the neutral player one touches the ball back to the same team.
If you are not Ileana Barbulescu please destroy this copy and contact WORLD CLASS COACHING.

The players in the middle can pass the ball to either of the neutral players (so this is not a
directional game) and the neutral players can move along their end lines.
You would play this game for 4 minutes and then have one of the teams in the middle switch
out with the neutral players. This means that in a 12 minute time period, each team/player
would play for 8 minutes and be neutral of 4 minutes.
The key is for the players to understand that even when they are the neutral players, they must
stay focused and keep moving to create passing lanes for the players in the middle.
If the ball goes over the side line, the ball starts with the other team and can be played to the
teammate in the middle of to either of the neutral players.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on possession,
attacking with numbers, defending and communication.
This is an 8 v 8 game plus a neutral keeper (numbers can vary). It's a 40 x 40 grid with 3 goals
on each end line that are 3 yards wide. There is a 5 x 5 area in the middle for the keeper.

The keeper starts with the ball and throws or kicks the ball to a yellow player. Yellow is trying
to score on any of the 6 goals and red is defending all 6 goals. The defending team can
position a player in each goal (as shown in the diagram) or can defend anyway they choose.
If yellow scores, the ball goes back to the keeper in the middle and they start over.
If red wins the ball, they must pass the ball to the keeper and if they do this successfully, then
the keeper passes the ball back out to red who is then scoring on any of the 6 goals.
If, using the diagram above, red wins the ball and tries to pass the ball to the keeper but
yellow intercepts the pass, yellow stays on the attack and continues to try to score on any of
the goals.
If the attacking team plays slowly, the defending team will be able to rotate players over to
defend whichever goal is being attacked. This means that while the attacking team wants to
maintain possession and knock the ball around to force the defending team to chase, they
must still play quickly in order to score.
This is an extremely fun game that works on many aspects of soccer. You can either play for a
set time period or to a given score. Many adaptations are available.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on possession
and spreading the field.
Start with 8 v 8 on a 40 x 40 grid (the number of players and size of the grid can vary). There is
one ball.
The thing that makes this game a bit different than a typical possession game is if a player
receives the ball with one foot on any of the out of bound lines, their team gets 1 point.
Potentially, a team could get 6 points with 5 passes (if all 5 passes were received on a line they
would get 1 point for the 5 passes and 5 points for the 5 receptions on the lines).
As an example, in the diagram below, the yellow player passes the ball to another yellow
player. Because the receiver is not on a line, they keep possession, get credit for 1 pass but
don't get any points.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on dribbling and
taking players on.
Start with your team in a 30 x 30 grid (smaller if you don't have a full team available) with half
the players with balls and the other half without.
The players with balls are dribbling at half speed and the players without balls are jogging.
The players with balls make eye contact with a player without a ball and then dribble right at
them. The player with the ball does a move, beats the defender (who is providing token
pressure) and then moves on to find the next player to beat. The defenders want to put just
enough pressure on the player with the ball to make it game related but are not trying to win
the ball. This is done for a one minute period and then the players switch roles and the players
who didn't have balls now are the dribblers and the players who did have the balls are now
the defenders.
After each group has a turn, they repeat but now the dribblers are at full speed. Again, the
defenders just provide token pressure. Each group gets a one minute turn on offense.

Next the dribblers stay at full speed but now the defenders put additional pressure on them.
The defenders still aren't trying to win the ball but are making the attackers work hard to beat
them.
In a 6 minute period, the players get a lot of touches on the ball, work on moves, acceleration,
fitness and are now ready to move on in their training. This is a great warm up activity for
players of all ages.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills. Today's featured activity works on shielding, possession and
competitiveness.
Start with a 10 x 10 grid with a player in each corner and a ball in the middle.
When the coach says “go” all four players try to win the ball and maintain possession. The
player who has the ball in their possession at the end of the round gets a point (the round lasts
10 seconds). There would be 10 rounds per game and the player with the most points at the
end of the game wins.
In the beginning, players will try to get to the ball and dribble away from the opponents but
they will quickly understand they need to win the ball, shield the ball from the opponents and
accept some of the body contact that will directed their way. Players need to be reminded this
is a contact sport and knocking a player off the ball with a legal shoulder charge is not only
acceptable but expected. As long as it wouldn't be a foul in a regular game, it's permissible in
this activity.
You can also vary the size of the grid and the time periods. You can change from a 10 x 10 grid
to a 5 x 5 grid or change the time length from 10 seconds to 5 seconds.
Next you would have teams. The players on opposite corners are now teammates so instead
of 1 v 3, it's 2 v 2.

Now, then the coach says 'go” the two reds are trying to win and keep the ball against the two
yellows who are doing the exact same thing.
This adds the element of teamwork into the activity but still works on the same things as
before.
This is a great activity to work on shielding, possession, competitiveness and will prepare the
players for the type of contact they will see in real games.

If there are more than 2 players in a grid when a team has the ball, they immediately lose
possession of the ball. If a player passes the ball and doesn't immediately sprint to a different
grid, they immediately lose possession of the ball.
When a team wins the ball (transitions from defense to offense, there is a slight delay allowed
so that the players have time to sprint to spread the field. Three players (or more) are allowed
in the same grid on so enough time needs to be allowed so the players can get to the
appropriate spacing.
In the beginning, it might be best to have one or two neutral players in this game so that
whichever team has the ball has 7 v 5. Even with these neutral players, the same rules would
apply (no more than 2 attacking players in a grid at a time and a sprint to a different grid after
a pass)
This is a great game to work on possession, movement off the ball and communication.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on driving balls,
receiving balls and first touch.
Start with two goals 25 yards apart (distance will vary depending upon the level of players).
Goals are 8 yards wide and there are 2 players per team.
One team starts with a ball and shoots on the other goal. The shot must be hit below the waist
and no players may use their hands. The defending team tries to block the shot.
If the shot is above the waist or not on goal, it's a point for the defending team. If the shot
results in a goal, it counts as two points for the shooting team. If the defending team can
block the ball and get to it before it goes more than 5 yards from goal and before it stops
rolling, they get to shoot and there is no point awarded
This forces the players to work on driving the ball on target, while also working on receiving
the ball laying balls are and working together.
The whole time the ball is in play, it's moving and if a shot is blocked by the defending team
but comes to a stop or goes more than 5 yards from goal, the ball is returned to the opposing
team for another shot.
Any time a ball has to be restarted it's done by a wall pass to a shot from within 5 yards of the
defending goal.

If the yellow team has the ball, they can score in any of the four goals. To score the ball must
be passed through the goal and received by a teammate.

Once a goal has been scored, the team with the ball tries to keep possession and can then
score on any of the other three goals. If the other team wins the ball, they can score on any of
the goals. If the first team wins the ball back, they can go to any of the four goals.
This game can be played with as few as eight players (four on each team) and the fewer the
numbers, the more the emphasis is on fitness.
Depending upon the numbers and needs of the players, you can make the field bigger or
smaller, you can also make the goals bigger or smaller.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on passing,
dribbling, fitness, communication, turns and much more.
There are two end lines (top and bottom) and each of the end lines is a goal. A point is scored
by stopping the ball on either of the end lines. The ball must come to a complete stop for the
point to be awarded.
Since both teams can go in either direction, this is a very quick moving yet physical game. If
the ball goes over either end line, the ball is given to the opposing team for a kick in (the ball
must be passed in). In the beginning, players will try to pass to a teammate on the end line
closest to them because they think that will be the best way to score but because the
defending team can be right on them.
Next, adjust the field to a 30 x 20 and change to 5 v 5. In this game, it's important to keep
uneven teams because otherwise half will defend one end line and the other half will defend
the other end line. By having odd numbered teams, you force more transition and movement.
This is a fun game that should be run as competitively as possible. If you have 18 players, play
3 games of 3 v 3 and after 5 minutes, rotate the teams so they all play against different players.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on shielding,
dribbling, possession and teamwork.
Start with three equal teams in a confined area. The number of players would affect the size of
the area but we will assume it's 5 v 5 v 5 on a 30 x 30 area. Each team starts with a ball
It's a 2 minute period and the objective is for each team to end up with as many balls as
possible. At the end of a 2 minute period, a team that has one ball gets one point, if a team
has two balls they get two points and if they have all three balls, they get three points. At the
start of each period, each team starts with a ball. There are a total of 5 periods so at the end of
the ten minute game, the team with the most points wins.
You can also put in different restrictions. For example, in the first period, unlimited touches
are allowed. In the second period, a player must tough the ball two times before passing.
Third period requires three touches etc. Or, you can put in maximum touches as a restriction.
This is a fun game that encourages competitiveness, shielding, passing and defending.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity is a scrimmage that has
a great deal of fitness.
This is a standard small sided scrimmage (numbers can vary but for this example we will
assume 6 v 6 plus keepers). Start with two goals 30 yards apart facing the wrong directions
(so instead of the goals facing each other, they are facing away from each other. There is a
keeper in each goal and all of the other players start in the middle
A ball is put into play and the yellow team is scoring on the bottom goal and the red team is
scoring on the top goal.
In order to score, all 6 players on your team must be over the end line (meaning in front of the
goal they are scoring on). If a goal is scored and one or more of the players is not over this line,
the goal does not count (the keeper does NOT have to do this as well).
If a goal is scored and all of the defending players are not over the end line, the goal counts as
one point plus a bonus for each player who isn't over. For example, in the diagram below:

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on possession
with direction.
Start with a 60 x 40 area. There are three groups of 6 players. Two groups play at a time and
the third group has two players on each end line and one player on each sideline. See
diagram below
The objective in this game is to keep possession while going in a specific direction. To get a
point a team would have to play the ball to a designated end line and receive the ball back
with a one touch pass. Using the diagram as an example, the yellow team starts by trying to
play the ball to the white players on the top end line and the red players try to play the ball to
the white players on the bottom end line.

When a ball has been played into the end players and returned with a one touch pass, the
teams then change directions and the yellow team would be attacking the bottom end line
and the red team would be attacking the top end line.
The players on the side lines are neutral players who are limited to one touch and always pass
the ball to the same team that played the ball out to them.
The difference between this possession game and a normal one is by adding a direction the
game it makes it more game realistic and forces the players to add more thought to their
game.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Todays featured activity works on passing to a
target player and communication.
Start with a 30 x 30 grid (size can vary) with small 3 yard goals in each corner. There is a server
on each line with balls and an attacking and defending player in the middle.
Any of the four servers can call the target players name and they play the ball into the target
player. In the beginning, the target player has unlimited touches can score by passing the ball
into any of the goals.
This is done for a one minute period and then the players switch roles.
Next target player is limited to 2 touches so they have one touch to receive the ball and then
must score with their second touch.
Next, the server tells the target player which goal to go to and the target player is still limited
to two touches. The server communicates which goal by talking, by pointing and also by
passing in the direction of the goal they want the target player to play to.
This is a great activity to work on playing a ball into the target player and leading the target
player to turn in the direction you want or to play a back pass.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on passing,
moving and changing directions.
Start with 6-8 players in a 30 x 30 grid (the numbers of players and size of the grid can vary
depending upon what is available etc.) with one ball per group.
The player with the ball passes to any of the other players in the grid and then sprints 5 yards.
Once the 5 yard sprint is done, the player then jogs (all other players are jogging while looking
for the next pass).

Next we add a change of direction to the activity. Now the rule is, when a player receives a
pass, they must take their first two touches to take the ball in a different direction before
passing the ball.

By adding the restriction the player must turn before making their next turn, it adds more
movement and touches of the ball. Again, once the players get accustomed to this activity,
add a second ball.
Next you can add the requirement of a move after receiving the pass, or require a juggle and
then a roof of the ball before the next pass.
Adding these requirements works on different skills and also keeps the activity fresh for the
players.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on dribbling and
first and second defenders.
On a grid that is 30 x 30 have a 5 x 5 box on each end. One player is in each box and six players
are in the middle with balls and two are in the middle without balls.
The players with the ball try to keep possession of the ball as long as possible. The two players
in the middle without balls try to win a ball by working together. The two defensive players
must work together as the two can only go after one ball at a time. When they win a ball, they
must pass the ball to either of the players in the small squares. If the ball gets into either of
those players, the player who lost the ball leaves the grid, gets their ball back and starts
working on juggling. This game is timed to see how long it takes for the two defensive players
to win all 6 balls. Once they do, they get to rest by rotating into the small squares, two new
players become defenders and the players who were in the square get a ball and become
offensive players.
This is a great activity to work on dribbling, first and second defending and is fun for the
players as well.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works with players of
all ages and can be adapted to the number of players involved in a session.
We will assume there are 10 players (or 20 players at which point we would play two games).
This is a 5 v 5 game in a 25 x 25 grid.
The ball gets played into the grid and whichever team wins the ball tries to maintain
possession and to make as many consecutive passes in a row without the ball going out of
play or the other team winning the ball.
If team A has the ball first and successfully makes 5 consecutive passes before team B wins the
ball, team B must make 6 or more consecutive passes in order to take the lead. The game has
a time limit (say 5 minutes) and whichever team had the highest number of consecutive
passes wins.
The reason this is such a good game is even if team A has had the majority of the possession,
team B can still win by stringing the most consecutive passes at the very end. When a team
loses possession, they have an incentive to win the ball back so the opponent can't beat their
high score. It typically results in a lot of work (both offensively and defensively) and a very
competitive environment.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on possession
and keeping your head up for the longer pass.
Break into two teams on a 60 x 40 grid with three sections. We will assume there are 14
players but this can be adapted for any number. There would be two teams of 6 with two
neutral players. The middle section of the grid is always empty.
If the yellow team has the ball they are looking to maintain possession (the white player is
always on offense). This would mean it's a 4 v 3 in the near third of the field. The players must
make 3 passes in their third of the field and then pass the ball to a teammate (or the neutral
player) in the far third of the field in order to get a point. The players in the far side would
move in order to make sure they are in good passing lanes.

This is a great activity because it works on passing in small distances while also working on
keeping the head up and looking for the longer pass. At the same time, it's working on
movement off the ball and defending.

reduce the size of the middle zone (and increase the size of the outside zones).

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on possession,
penetration and movement off the ball.
Teams play possession in the middle part of the field. To get a point, a team must pass the ball
into one of their corners (red scores by passing into the bottom two corners and yellow scores
by passing into one of the upper two corners). Any player on a team is allowed in their
attacking corner but no defensive player is allowed in the corners.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on finishing
under pressure.
Start with a goal on the end line and another goal at the top of the 18 with a keeper in each
goal. There are two teams of two inside of the 18 and a server on each side of the 18.
A ball gets served in from either side and whichever team wins the ball can go to either goal to
score. The first team to score 10 goals wins
Not only are the teams competing with each other but the two keepers are competing with
each other as well. The keeper who gives up the fewest goals wins.
The players are encouraged to play very competitively, with a lot of physical contact (within
the laws of the game) in order to recreate a true game situation.
This game is very competitive, very physical and very enjoyable and is perfect for small group
training of forwards and keepers.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on possession
and working with a target player.
This is a 4 v 4 game with a target player and keeper on each team. The field is 60 x 40 with a 40
x 40 zone in the middle of the field. The keepers are in goal and the target players are on each
of the end lines of the middle zone
The players in the middle are playing possession with three passes required before going
forward. Once a team gets three passes, they must find their target player who must touch
the ball before anyone can go to goal.
The target player is restricted to staying on their line until they get a touch on the ball. Once
the target player touches the ball, they are live to move off the line and the team can go to
goal.
If the yellow team has the ball, the red team would try to win it back but also must think in
terms of marking the target player because otherwise there will be easy outlet and he goes to
goal.

Everything is played one touch and the players have to always keep their eyes up to know
where to pass to (or specifically, where not to pass to) and where to make the next run to
If you want to make this more difficult, add another player or two and also add a second ball.

communication to the activity.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today's featured activity works on possession,
vision and movement as well as finding a target player.
Start with a field that is 30 x 30 with a 5 x 5 area in the middle. It's a 5 v 5 game with 4 neutral
players. One player from each team is in the middle area and the others are spread out in the
30 x 30 area. The neutral players are on the end lines.
A ball is put in play and a team scores a point by playing the ball into their teammate in the
center area. They can pass it in directly or play it through any of the neutral players.
When the defending team wins the ball, they become the attackers by passing the ball to any
of the neutral players.
The neutral players are limited to one touch and everyone else is unlimited.
There are two options for rules regarding the central players. Either they can be required to
possess the ball for three touches to get the point or you can put in a requirement that they
have to pass the ball out to a teammate and once the teammate receives the pass, a point is
awarded. It just depends upon what you want to emphasize.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on movement
off the ball and providing support.
Start with 5 players in a 20 x 20 grid with one ball. The rules are that the players must jog the
whole time and pass the ball one touch amongst them. After each pass the passer must sprint
5 yards before resuming a jog.
This will force the players to look to space where to run to and to start thinking where their
teammates are and where they are going so they don’t all run to the same spot. If the players
are struggling at first, change to 2 or 3 touch passes rather than restricting to one touch.
Once the players are doing this successfully, add one defender and now its 5 v 1 but the same
restrictions apply (everyone must be jogging and a 5 yard sprint after each pass). The idea is
to get the players away from the normal 5 v 1 idea of everyone standing in a circle, playing
keep away and instead, adds creativity and movement
Next the same thing is done with a second defender so it’s now 5 v 2. Again, constant
movement is mandated with the five-yard sprint after each pass
The next step in this progression would be to have a 5 v 5 scrimmage with small goals but
keeping the same restrictions in place (mandatory jog and 5 yard sprint after each pass). The
option of one touch is still available.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s activity works on spacing and
communication.
This is a 4 v 4 activity in a 40 x 30 grid. The grid is broken into 3 vertical sections and there is
one player from each team in each section. See diagram below
This is a regular scrimmage with the one unusual rule being that one player must be in each
section for each team. Players are NOT assigned to a specific zone so any player can go to any
zone provided the zone they are leaving has a teammate in it.
Offensively, this activity will encourage teams to switch balls quickly (looking for 1 v 1
situations or numbers up situations before the other team can switch quickly) and defensively
this is working on constant communication. If, at any time, a team doesn’t have a player in
each section, it’s a point for the other team.
This is a great activity to work on quick play, communication and shifting of players and you
can always make a field bigger and add additional players as they get a better understanding
of the game.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on making runs
to get behind the defense.
This is a 4 v 4 game plus keepers on a 60 x 40 with 4 additional players for each team on the

top goal.
The yellow players in the middle can only use the yellow players on the outside and the red
players in the middle can only use the red players on the outside. The players on the outside
are limited to one touch but they can pass amongst themselves. The players in the middle are
trying to score goals and are encouraged to play high-pressure defense.
In the example below, yellow has the ball and red has stepped up to defend in their attacking
half of the field.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on possession

The key is when a team loses the ball; they try to win it back as quickly as possible as opposed
to letting the other teams set up before defending.
The next step is to add a direction to the game. The two attacking teams are trying to score on
one goal, which the third team is defending. In the diagram below, yellow and white are
attacking the low goal and red is defending this goal.

Welcome to the FineSoccer Drills Newsletter. Today’s featured activity works on passing,
receiving, possession and defending.
This is a 6 v 6 game to practice your teams and receiving. It also works on possession and
tackling.
Mark a 40x40 yard playing area and position 2 posts at one corner to act as a gate.
One team is given the ball, and they have to pass the ball amongst themselves, accomplishing
a certain number of consecutive passes without the opponent touching the ball.
If they succeed in getting the set number of consecutive passes, the opposing team runs out
of the square through the gate, sprints around the circle and coming back inside the square
through the gate and rejoins the game.
The defending team that allows the set number of passes must sprint the entire 160 yards
within 35 seconds. The coach whistles to signal the opposing team to start running out of the
gate, and whistles again to signify the end of the 35 seconds allotted. At the 2nd whistle, the
team inside the square starts passing the ball amongst them again. The sprinting team doesn't
have to be completely inside the square before they can rejoin the game. As soon as a
member is inside the square after the 2nd whistle, she can attempt to steal the ball from the
other team.
For other variations, you can put a penalty on the player who “gave” the ball away to the
opposing team. The player goes out of the game and the team plays with one man short. The
player on penalty can only rejoin the game once her team gains possession of the ball again.
Another variation is to impose conditions, such as two-touch soccer, or the use of a no tackling
rule (only interceptions allowed).

This activity works best in groups of 8’s although the activity can be altered based on the
numbers available. There is a grid 20 x 20 and four players are on the outside and four are in
the middle. The four on the outside each have a ball.
The two red players in the middle are on offense and the two yellow players in the middle are
on defense. The four players on the outside are on offense regardless of the color. The red
players in the middle look to make runs to receive a pass from the outside and play the ball
back one touch

After a one minute period, the players on the outside switch with the players on the inside and
play is resumed with the same rules. After the next minute, the players go back to their
original spot and the offensive players now become defensive players and the defensive
players become offensive players.
Next three of the players on the outside start with a ball and one starts without a ball. Now the
offensive players in the middle must receive the ball, and pass it to the person on the outside
without the ball.

The players on the outside can help the players on the inside by passing the ball in a way to
make it easy for the receiving player to find the open player to pass to. Also, the players on the
outside would have to communicate with the receiving player so they know who is open (and
who isn’t) and what is best to do with the ball. This communication would be verbal, non-
verbal and a combination of the two.
It’s been my experience that after doing this activity for a while, communication skills will pick
up dramatically (at the very least, short term).
