In 1914, a war broke out between the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance.

This soon turned into a


world war, named the Great War or the World War I. There were many causes behind the outbreak. I
weakly agree that militarism was the main cause.

Militarism was an important cause of WW1. People took pride in their armies and navies, and to
make sure that theirs were the best, countries spent great money on huge armies. Some countries
got caught up in an arms race. In 1906, the British built the rst Dreadnought, a new battleship. The
Germans responded by building some of their own. The more weapons that were built, the more
people wanted to use them. By 1914, Britain and Germany were ready for a war. In conclusion,
militarism was a major reason for the war, yet there were more important reasons.

Alliances was another main cause of WW1. As countries began to feel threatened, they started to
form alliances to back them up. Europe split into two alliances. Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Italy
formed the Triple Alliance, while Britain, France, and Russia formed the Triple Entente. This means
that if one country had disagreement with another, it would lead to a large scale war involving many
other countries. Therefore, I believe that alliances was a more important cause than militarism.

Another cause of WW1 is nationalism. People started to take great pride in their countries, and
some people felt that their country was better than others. For many leaders of Europe, the way to
prove that they were the best, was to have a war with their rivals. Nationalism is also the idea that
people who live in a nation are part of the same culture. In 1908, Austria took over a part of Serbia
called Bosnia. Franz Ferdinand, an Austrian Prince, was killed by Serb terrorists in Bosnia. In
conclusion, nationalism was also an important reason of WW1, but I believe it’s not as important as
militarism or alliances.

Furthermore, imperialism was another major cause of WW1. Imperialism is the desire to have an
empire. The race to colonise countries, particularly in Africa, led to tension among European
countries. In 1890, Germany’s new leader Kaiser Wilhelm I, wanted to have an empire like Britain. By
1914, Britain owned 1/3 of the land in the world where as Germany hadn’t managed to gain territory.
This created tension between Britain and Germany. Therefore, imperialism was a crucial reason of
WW1. I believe that imperialism is more important than nationalism, but not as important as
militarism or alliances.

In conclusion, militarism was major cause that led to WW1. However, I weakly agree that it is the
most important reason, since there are more important reasons, such as alliances.
