ISO 14064
as a Carbon Footprint Verification?
Who is ISO?
International Organization for Standardization
is an organization that creates standards to
ensure the quality, safety, and efficiency of
products, services, and systems.
Understanding ISO 14064
ISO 14064 is an international standard for
quantifying and reporting greenhouse gas
emissions.
ISO 14064 is divided into 3
parts, each focusing on different
aspects of greenhouse gas (GHG)
management.
Part 1 specifies guidance at the
organisation level, part 2 specifies
guidance at the project level, and part
3 specifies guidance for validation and
verification.
ISO 14064-1: details principles and
requirements for designing, developing,
managing and reporting organization-
or company-level GHG inventories.
ISO 14064-2: focuses on GHG projects or
project-based activities specifically
designed to reduce GHG emissions or
increase GHG removals.
ISO 14063-3: Quantification and
reporting of GHG- Provides methods for
verification and validation of GHG
statements and qualification of verifiers.
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PARTS OF ISO 14064
Use of ISO 14064 could::
Enhance the environmental integrity of GHG
quantification,
Enhance the credibility, consistency and
transparency of GHG quantification, monitoring and
reporting,
Facilitate the development and implementation of an
organization's GHG management strategies and
plans,
Facilitate the development and implementation of
GHG projects,
Facilitate the ability to track performance and
progress in the reduction of GHG emissions and/or
increase in GHG removals, and
Facilitate the crediting and trade of GHG emission
reductions or removal enhancements.
Other Standards in The Series
ISO/TC 207 developed a number of other standards
that contribute to the transition to a zero-carbon
economy as well. It includes:
ISO 14015, Environmental management – Guidelines for
environmental due diligence assessment.
ISO 14016, Environmental management – Guidelines on the
assurance of environmental reports.
ISO 14030, Environmental performance evaluation – Green
debt instruments.
ISO 14080, Greenhouse gas management and related
activities – Framework and principles for methodologies on
climate actions.
ISO 14097, Greenhouse gas management and related
activities – Framework including principles and
requirements for assessing and reporting investments and
financing activities related to climate change.
