ENGINEERING

General Instructions: All works must be encoded and printed on legal bond paper (8.5” by
13”). The format of the Problem Set is presented in the last part of this file.

5. Some of the qualities of bridge aesthetics are like the qualities of classical music.
Choose one of these qualities common with music and describe how that quality can
improve the appearance of bridges.

When choosing for qualities of bridges similar to classical music, the harmony for me is the
most important. The ability of a bridge to coexist within its environment shows the thought
behind the construction of the bridge. By being in relation to its environment while fulfilling its
intended purpose, I can say that the bridge is actually done with meticulous thought process
and shows the pride in its design. By considering the principles of harmony, bridge designers
can create structures that are not only functional but also beautiful, enriching the visual
landscape and enhancing the experience of those who interact with them.

6. Provide 10 bridge structures (with picture/s) and discuss the aesthetic qualities those
bridges have.

Brooklyn Bridge, New York City, USA - a hybrid

cable-stayed/suspension bridge with a neo-Gothic
architectural style. Its stone towers and intricate
cable patterns create a sense of strength and
elegance. This bridge is very famous due to its
contrast and texture that signifies history of this
bridge. This bridge is in contrast with its
surrounding due to its similarity in medieval design
while still having the modern appearance.

Tower Bridge, London, UK - a bascule and

suspension bridge with a Victorian Gothic style. Its
ornate towers and intricate details give it a
majestic and historic feel. Similar to the brooklyn
bridge, it also reflects contrast and texture in its
design. The majestic and historical appearance of
this bridge shows its elegance and strength due to
its rigid structure.
