2.10.1 Purpose:
This section describes minimum requirements for the safe use, handling, storage and disposal of
hazardous materials. We will provide information about hazardous chemicals to all employees, that they
are exposed to these hazards in the workplace. Communications of the hazards and the necessary
protective measures are accomplished through the following program elements:
1. Written Hazard Communication Program,
2. Hazardous materials inventory
3. Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) & chemical Hazard Bulletin.
4. Labels and other forms of warning,
5. Information and training.
2.10.2 Responsibility:
Project Manager:
Developing, implementing and evaluating the Hazard Communication Program annually to
ensure Aramco compliance
Establishing emergency procedures to properly handle hazardous material releases.
Providing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for employee use.
Safety officer/safety trainer:
Maintaining and updating the MSDS, CHB & inventory lists.
Ensuring all related employees are trained in general hazard communication;
Developing and implementing a universal hazardous chemical labelling system
Ensure safety storage, handling of all hazardous materials & chemicals.
Providing department specific information and training relating to hazard communication for
affected employees.
Providing PPE and clothing in accordance with prescribed training.
Employees:
Complying with the Hazard Communication Program procedures;

Participating in Hazard Communication training session and department specific training
sessions;
Understanding how to read chemical labels and MSDSs;
Understanding and taking necessary precautions when handling hazardous chemicals; and
Using PPE.
2.10.3 Requirements
Al-Marzouk shall post the relevant CHBs, or MSDSs in the areas where the particular materials
are stored.
Shall ensure that employees who handle hazardous materials are fully aware of safe handling
procedures as per the CHB or MSDS.
When using/handling potentially harmful chemicals or hazardous substances, precautions shall
be taken to ensure that personnel do not swallow, inhale or allow it to contact their skin.
Hands shall be washed thoroughly after handling chemicals or hazardous substances.
Personnel shall be trained to remove contaminated clothing, promptly flush affected areas with
clean water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention when harmful chemicals contact
the skin or eyes.
Chemicals shall not be subjected to undue physical shock, pressure or heat.
Excess chemicals no longer needed shall be safely disposed of or recycled per GI 430.001.
Personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection equipment, as stipulated in
the relevant Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or Chemical Hazard Bulletin (CHB), shall be used
when working with chemicals or hazardous substances. See Chapter I-3, Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE), of this manual.
When handling volatile liquids, the threshold limit value (TLV) of the vapor shall be determined
and not exceeded. When exhaust ventilation is unavailable, good mechanical ventilation shall be
provided or the work shall be performed outdoors.
Respiratory protection equipment shall be used when chemical concentrations in air exceed the
TLV.
Emergency eye wash stations and showers shall:
Be provided when eyes or skin may be exposed to chemicals or hazardous substances.
Be installed and maintained per SAES-B-069.

Only the necessary amount of hazardous materials shall be stored at the job site, usually not
more than a 1-day supply.
Hazardous materials shall not be allowed to accumulate. Extra amounts shall be removed from
the work area.
Waste (e.g., slop liquids and trash) shall be immediately removed from the work area.
Smoking and use of devices not classified as explosion proof are prohibited near flammable
liquids or finely divided combustible solids.
Ensure Fire extinguishers shall be available.
Identification and labelling:
All materials or substances (gas, liquid or solid) brought into a facility or shall be identified and
evaluated for their potential physical or health hazards.
We shall prepare a complete inventory of all current chemicals and products (e.g. Liquids, solids,
powders, pastes, gases) at the facility or project site.
The inventory shall be prepared at the beginning of the project and each quarter thereafter until
project completion.
Each container of hazardous material shall be properly labeled to indicate its contents and
hazards. Hazardous materials received at a facility or project site without proper labels shall be
set aside and not distributed for use until properly labeled.
Portable containers into which hazardous chemicals are transferred that are intended only for use
by the employee who performs the transfer shall also be identified as to their contents (e.g.
acetone, gasoline).
Saudi Aramco CHB Label sample given below.

Labels shall be prominently located on each container of hazardous material so as to be legible
while the container is in the upright position.
Labels on containers exposed to direct sunlight and/or adverse weather shall be periodically
inspected to verify that the label is clear and conspicuous and has not been damaged or
destroyed.
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
Complete and current MSDSs/CHBs for each chemical or hazardous substance stored/used on
site shall be readily accessible (e.g., at the location of the material storage or handling areas) to
employees and contractors and to emergency response personnel
Transportation storage and disposal
Hazardous materials shall be protected against shock, incidental mixing with other materials,
damage to containers, undue heat from the sun or other sources, and theft during transportation.
Vehicles transporting hazardous materials shall be suitably labelled and Drivers shall have copies
of the MSDS(s) or CHB(s) for the material(s) being transported with them at all times.

Specific storage and handling recommendations for hazardous materials provided in MSDSs
and/or CHBs shall be followed.
MSDSs and/or CHBs shall be referenced to identify which chemicals are reactive to each other
prior to transportation or storage.
Chemicals shall not be allowed to inadvertently mix with other substances during
transportation, storage or use.
Incompatible chemicals shall not be stored near each other or be mixed together. Reactive
substances shall not be stored near flammable or corrosive materials.
Chemical containers in storage cabinets shall be inspected periodically for container integrity.
Toxic substances shall be segregated in well-identified areas with proper exhaust ventilation.
Hazardous materials shall be stored in containers that are safe for storage, transportation and
use.
Empty hazardous material containers shall be washed free of the material or destroyed. Liquids
used to wash containers shall be properly disposed of as liquid hazardous waste in accordance
with GI 430.001.
2.10.4 Training:
Hazardous materials training to all our employees and key staffs are given by our safety trainer.
Additional hazardous materials training to relevant employees are given by Saudi Aramco.
Each employee who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals when working must be provided
information and trained prior to initial assignment to work with a hazardous chemical, and
whenever the hazard changes.
Before they start their jobs or are exposed to new hazardous chemicals, employees must attend
a hazard communication training that covers the following topics:
Hazardous chemicals present in their workplace.
Any operations in their work area where hazardous chemicals are used.
How to understand and use the information on labels and in Safety Data
Sheets.
Physical and health hazards of the chemicals in their work areas.
Methods used to detect the presence or release of hazardous chemicals in the
work area.
Steps we have taken to prevent or reduce exposure to these chemicals.
