Lesson 2: Online Safety, Security, Ethics and Etiquette
Most of us use the Internet every day. Sometimes, we do not pay attention on how much
information we share online. Below is a quationnaire about how much information you
have shared so far. Put a check(/) under SHARED or NOT SHARED

Online Safety and Security
The internet is a public place and it is up to you to protect yourself. Here are some tips to
help you stay safe when using the Internet.
Tips on how to be safe online
Do not share your password with anyone.
Add friends you know in real life.
Do not visit untrusted websites.
Add password to your WIFI at home to make it private.
Install and update antivirus in your computer.
Do not give your personal information to anyone
Think before you click.
Never post about your future vacation.
Internet Risk
Cyberbullying -It happens when someone intentionally abused, harass, and mistreated
by other person using electronic communication.
Identity Theft -It is a crime of stealing personal information for the purpose of assuming
that person’s name or identity to make any form of transactions.
Cyber Stalking -A criminal practice where electronic communication is used to stalk or
harass individual or group.
Sexting -The act of sending sexually explicit text messages, images, and videos.
Internet Threats
Here are some of the threats you should be aware of when using the Internet:
1. Types of Malware - stands for malicious software
A. Virus – a malicious program that replicate itself by copying itself to another
program.
B. Trojan Horse – a malicious program that disguised as legitimate program that
user will accept and use but take control of your computer.
C. Worm – malicious program that copy’s itself and spreads to other computers.
D. Spyware – a malicious program that gathers information from victim’s computer
and send it back to the hacker.
*Keylogger – A program that runs in the background and steals user credentials
and confidential information and send back to hack by recording every keystroke
that a user makes on their computer or device.
E. Adware – An unwanted advertisement that will pop-up several times on victim’s
computer then behave abnormally and tedious to close them.
2. Spam - unwanted email mostly from bots or advertisers. It can be used to send
malware.
3. Phishing- Its goal is to acquire sensitive personal information like passwords and
credit card details. This is done by sending you an email that will direct the user to visit a
website and be asked to update his/her username, password, credit card, or personal
information.
* Pharming- a more complicated way of phishing where it exploits the DNS
(Domain Name Service) system.
Think Before You Click
Here are things you might want to consider before posting something over the internet:
1. Before you post something on the web, ask these questions to yourself: Would you
want your parents or grandparents to see it? Would you want your future boss to see it?
Once you post something on the web, you have no control of who sees your posts.
2. Your friends depend on you to protect their reputation online. Talk to your friends
about this serious responsibility.
3. Set your post to “private.” In this way, search engineswill not be able to scan that post.
4. Avoid using names. Names are easy for search engines to scan.
5. If you feel that a post can affect you or other’s reputation, ask the one who posted it to
pull it down or report it as inappropriate.
Netiquette It is a word that came from the two words “net” and “etiquette”. It is an
etiquette applied online that shows proper manner and behavior. If you are a member of
an online society through social media you are called netizen. And in interacting with
other netizen online, we need to maintain good behavior which is acceptable to others in
online community.
The Core Rules of Netiquette by Seth T. Ross
1. Remember the human.
2. Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
3. Know where you are in cyberspace.
4. Respect other people's time and bandwidth.
5. Make yourself look good online.
6. Share expert knowledge.
7. Help keep flame wars under control.
8. Respect other people's privacy.
9. Don't abuse your power.
10. Be forgiving of other people's mistakes
