Grade 9 Christian Living

Lesson 1
“To Give and Not to Count the Cost”
(DISCIPLESHIP)

Presented by: Ms. Hilary Ann Galanida

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

● Creed/Aral: Describe discipleship and its relationship to

Christian morality
● Code/Asal: Make a conscious effort in following Jesus in our
words, actions & in our way of relating with others as Jesus’ true
disciples
● Cult/Dasal: Seek God’s grace to help us lead a Christian moral
life
● For Christians, moral living is simply
“following Christ.” Yet when “morality” is
mentioned, the first thing we often think about
is laws, commandments, a series of do’s and
don’ts, and dire punishments if we fail.
● But Christian Faith is more than a set of truths to be believed; it is
the way of Christ which leads to life (cf CCC 1696). It is the Gospel
of Christ believed and lived which will decide our destiny as
Christians.

● Fullness of life here on earth means that, in all the innumerable

actions, events and problems of daily life, we walk with Jesus of
Nazareth, the Christ, who is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life”
(Jn 14:6) (cf CFC 674).
What is Morality?

action evil (even the intention and
circumstances are good.)

FOR EXAMPLE:

THE STORY OF ROBIN HOOD

THE OBJECT CHOSEN

If the object is bad, it automatically makes the

action evil (even the intention an
circumstances are good.)

An object's goodness or badness is

determined by the Law revealed by God.
(Human reason and conscience can help us
know there norms.)
THE SOURCES OF MORALITY

The morality of human acts depends on:

The object chosen

The intention (the end)

THE INTENTION

This is the "WHY" of the act. This is rooted in your

WILL. Intentions can be good or bad.
FOR EXAMPLE, the object is "giving to charity."
Good Intention Bad Intention
You give to charity You give to charity to
to help those less manipulate other into
fortunate than thinking you are
yourself. someone you're not.
THE INTENTION
The end (intention) doesn't justify the means.

A good intention can never turn an intrinsically bad action into one.

be justified because

The object chosen

The intention (the end)

The circumstances of the action

THE CIRCUMSTANCES
This is the '' HOW,WHO,WHEN,WHERE''of the act.

Circumstances can lessen or increase our blameworthiness

(culpability) of an act.

Ignorance , fear and other psychological and social factors can

lessen or nullify our responsibility for our actions.
THE CIRCUMSTANCES

For example: Being overwhelmed by the fear of personal harm

and not helping a dying victim at an accident scene could
greatly diminish moral responsibility.

the end, and of the circumstances together."
