Review

The document outlines the process for reviewing and updating the ERA Geotechnical Design manual, including setting terms of reference and conducting a desk study of existing manuals and related guidelines. It proposes the addition of chapters on Landslide Analysis and Mitigation, Geosynthetic Design, Retaining Structures, Foundation Design, and Culverts and Trenchless Technology Design, detailing their respective subtopics. The document emphasizes the need for workshops, discussions of findings, and recommendations to enhance the design manual.

- Setting TOR for the reviewing and updating process

o Organization of the Manual

o Depth of treatment of each issues
- Desk study of:
o existing manuals (all versions)
o related manuals
o guidelines and standards (national and international)
o related studies and research findings (national and international)
o gaps in the existing ERA Geotechnical Design manual.
▪ Aspect is treated as a sub-topic (A separate chapter should be devoted to
it as “ Landslide Analysis and Mitigation” containing
General/Introduction; Landslide Terminology (Landslide Dimensions,
Landslide Features); Landslide Susceptibility; Landslide monitoring and
Instrumentation; Geotechnical Investigation for landslide susceptible areas
(Field testing (+Geophysical Testing, Laboratory Testing); Development
of Design Parameters and other input data for landslide analysis (Static
and dynamic aspect); Landslide Mitigation Measures: Types, Selection,
Design, Construction Aspect; Design requirements (Static and dynamic
aspects); References)
▪ Geotechnical investigation aspect is missing (Spacing and layout, and
depth of test borings for landslide investigations considering the size and
nature of the landslide)

- Discuss main findings and recommendations
- Update the design manual
- Conduct workshops

A separate chapter for Geosynthetic Design shall exist with the following sub
topics

Geosynthetic Design
• Introduction
• Geosynthetic Types, Characteristics, and Highway Applications
• Geosynthetic Functional and Application Design
• References used
