RHYTHMIC ACTIVITIES

GARILLOS, KIM APRIL M.LPT

INSTRUCTOR
“Every individual has rhythm. It is
found in all of nature and is natural
to every individual. Rhythm is most
clearly seen through dance the art
of movement.”
WHAT IS RHYTHMIC ACTIVITIES?
Rhythmic Activities- are the physical manifestations of the mental and
emotional response of the individual to rhythm. They are activities which a
child responds to physically, socially, and mentally to regular patterns of
sound.
They are also a source of enjoyment for people of all ages. Through these
activities, skills and the sense of rhythm are acquired and developed,
feelings are expressed, basic principles of time, space and force can be
experienced. Everyone reacts to music or rhythm in one form or another. A
head swaying, a foot tapping, fingers snapping, shoulders and body moving
while a musical piece is played are physical reactions.
What is rhythm? - Is the regular recurrence
of accented and unaccented beats?
Rhythms- Is a term which denotes an aspect of a quality
of movement that is sometimes thought of as dance.
When an individual moves in response to a particular
rhythm or music we call the movements as rhythmic
movements or rhythms. Structured forms which start
creative rhythmic movements are called rhythms.
Rhythm is the basis of music and dance. The
purpose is to provide a variety of fundamental
movement experiences so the child can learn
to move effectively and efficiently and can
develop a sense of Rhythm. Fundamental

Dance
refers to movement set to music where there emerges
organization, structure and pattern. It is a composition
that implies arrangement of parts into a form.
Dance is a symbol of cultural identity. It is a medium of
cultural fusion with a focus on the intertwining of different
cultures in fact, dance today is not simply cross-cultural
but pan-cultural and planetary.
Dance is known to be the mother of arts. It is concerned
with communication of emotions or ideas through the
medium of movement. The basic vehicle of dance is the
human body and, as an art form, dance expressed in
movement. It attempts to convey ideas or feelings
through carefully selected patterns which are arranged in
a form judged to be the best to meet the needs of that
particular communication.
Dance will never die because it is being reborn through
different dancers, different movements, and different
To understand dance, we must open ourselves to the culture
from which it springs; conversely, as we begin to gain insight
into a dance, we are on a path to understanding the culture that
produced it. This is the premise of dancing.
In the Philippines, dance is as diverse as the culture
intermingling in the Archipelago. It encompasses all the dance
forms that have been used by the Filipinos through the
centuries to express themselves. This dazzling diversity of
dances in different forms and dynamics grew out of the times,
situation, and experiences of the people and the exposure to
the varied cultures and tradition introduced by the waves of
colonial rule that have reached the Philippines shores.
The dances of the Philippines are deeply
rooted in our culture. They are beautiful part
of our national and cultural heritage and it
should be made an important part of every
Filipinos child’s school experience.
Dancing - is a means of expressing one’s
emotions through movement disciplined by
rhythm. It is an act of moving rhythmically and
expressively to an accompaniment. The
word dancing came from an old German word
“danson” which means to “ stretch”.
Essentially, all dancing is made up of stretching
and relaxing.

In education, rhythmic activities like dance is recognized as a
wholesome activity that provides many opportunities for
physical, mental, and social growth, with special emphasis on
the creative and aesthetic aspects of movement. Since
dance is movement, the program provides an excellence
medium for physical development. A unique aspect of the
development is a better understanding of body as a tool for
self-expression. However not only is dance a tool for
self-expression, but inherent in dance are excellent
possibilities for over-all development.
Rhythmic Activities Can
Keep You Healthy
Any rhythmic activity involves certain body movements
following a steady and prominent beat. Individuals who
practice rhythmic body movements during an aerobic
exercise or dancing enjoy several health benefits that
improve the quality of life.
Aside from the physical health, rhythmic activities can
improve our general and psychological well-being, as well.
Dancing to your heart’s content
Aside from burning calories, research shows that
dancing can improve one’s cardiovascular health.
Studies have shown that a regular dancing session can
lower blood pressure, reduces fat and improves the
ratio of “good” to “bad” cholesterol. Rhythmic activities
can also strengthen bones, increase muscular
strength, and contribute to better coordination, flexibility
and agility.
Relieve your stress away
One of the best ways to relieve stress is to listen to music.
Following the beat of the music, rhythmic movements can
be as simple as tapping your fingers, clapping or stomping
your feet. This activity triggers the release of biochemical
stress reducers such as dopamine, also known as a “feel
good” neurotransmitter that provides the drive and focus to
be productive. As an aftereffect, dopamine also improves
the quantity and quality of relaxation and rest, too.
Improved mental health
Aside from increased physical confidence, rhythmic
activities can also improve mental functions
because rhythm regulates the brain and prevents
cognitive decline. It also boosts the chemicals in
our brain that support better memory and learning.
Better social skills
By regularly participating in rhythmic activities, one also
gains greater self-confidence and self-esteem. With
improved positive self-image, one is more motivated to
pursue personal goals, and able to practice impulse
control and resilience when faced with adversities. As a
result, there is an over-all joyful attitude and an increased
state of happiness that leads to gaining greater life
satisfaction.
Rhythmic activity is a channel through which we communicate
with others. When we watch a performance, the subconscious
interprets the movements and triggers certain emotions inside
us. This is why we to get teary-eyed when watching a graceful
ballet performance and electrified at flamenco. For the
performers, a rhythmic activity is also useful in diverting their
attention and energy away from stressful things.
Rhythmic activities are forms of aerobic exercise. These
involve muscle stretching, toning, and conditioning while
increasing heart rate at the same time. When performed
regularly, you’ll indeed feel its effects in all aspects of your life.
