Ecosystem Interactions for Students

The document outlines a lesson plan on the interactions of living things within ecosystems, emphasizing the roles of biotic and abiotic factors. It discusses the concepts of habitats, predator-prey relationships, and the importance of these interactions in maintaining ecological balance. The lesson includes hands-on activities and assessments to engage students in understanding these concepts.

Lesson 2:Interactions of Living Things
.
Students will use models to show the relationships between living
things in an ecosystem

Agenda:
You will need:

▪ Ecosystems Will
- Science book

▪ Habitats

▪ Predator and prey

Ecosystems
What are the ecosystems?
The Ecosystem is made up of all living and nonliving things in
an environment.

All of the living things in an environment are called biotic factors. Plants,
animals, and bacteria are biotic factors

All the nonliving things in the environment Air, water, soil rocks, and light
are called Abiotic factors
Ecosystems can be small like a single log or a pond

or very large like a forest or a desert (each

organism must have its own space)
the natural home
or environment of
an animal, plant, or
other organism
● Called habitat
Habitat
● Habitats vary depending on the type of ecosystem, such as freshwater
habitats (rivers)

● Each living thing has its own special role that an organism plays in the
ecosystems

● Examples: an earthworm's niche in a forest ecosystems is to break down

plant matter in the soil.
What are the biotic factors in the pond ecosystem?
What are the abiotic factors in this river
ecosystem, and how do you know?
Predator and prey

In the photo, which

animal is the
predator?
And which is the
prey?
Predator and prey
Predator: organism that hunts for the food

Prey: the organism they hunt

Predators are important in ecosystems
because they help control the size of
prey populations
