The document discusses the completion of various welding studies, including the effects of preheating and post-heating on weld quality and the application of welding in structural steel fabrication, supported by significant industrial contributions. A special committee has been formed to further investigate fundamental aspects of welding, with multiple conferences held and ongoing research at 11 universities. Additionally, six reports on welding research have been published in the Journal of the American Welding Society.

NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL 31

Thus , with a study this year of the effect of preheating and post-
heating on the quality of the weld , a long series of investigations on
the welding of steel rails is being drawn to a close . Similarly , another
extensive series of studies upon the application of welding to the
fabrication of structural steel in buildings and bridges , supported
by contributions from industrial corporations amounting in money to
$22,500 and in services to two or three times that amount , is also
nearing conclusion with the completion of practically all the qualifi-
cation tests planned upon the test pieces which have been sent by
the several shops to the laboratories cooperating in this program .
The work of the committee on pressure vessels also , which has con-
ducted a long series of tests upon high pressure tanks and other con-
tainers of various shapes and specifications , has been much reduced ,
except for work upon light-gage tanks .
To provide for this change in the nature of the work of the bu-
reau a special committee has been appointed , under the chairmanship
of Mr. Henry M. Hobart , of the General Electric Co. at Schenectady ,
to develop the fundamental aspects of these welding investigations .
A conference under the auspices of this committee was held in Cleve-
land at the time of the fall meeting of the American Welding Society ,
October 9-13 , 1929. A similar conference had been held the year
before at the Philadelphia meeting of the society , and a third con-
ference is proposed for the meeting of the society this fall at Chicago .
Programs of fundamental research on problems of welding are now
in progress at 11 universities . Six published reports have resulted
from the work of the committee on fundamental research in welding
during the past year :
A Metallographic Study of Some Metallic Arc Welds , by H. M. Boylston, A.
- Jenkin , and J. C. Carpenter . Journal of the American Welding Society , vol . 8 :
26-47 . September , 1929 .
Stress Strain Characteristics of Welded Joints , by J. Hammond Smith . Journal
of the American Welding Society , vol . 8 : 79-94 . September , 1929 .
Preliminary Report of the Investigation of the Nature of Nitrogen Needles ,
by P. P. Alexander . Journal of the American Welding Society , vol . 8 : 94-99 .
September , 1929 .
Chemical Reactions of the Carbon Arc , by Gilbert E. Doan and E. E. Kholm .
Journal of the American Welding Society , vol . 8 : 130-136 . September , 1929 .
A Contribution to the Study of the Influence of Welding Conditions and Sub-
sequent Heat Treatment on the Structure of the Weld , by Karl Kustiner and
V. N. Krivobok . Journal of the American Welding Society , vol . 8 : 40-62 . De-
cember , 1929 .
Cathode Energy of the Iron Arc , by Gilbert E. Doan . Journal of the American
Welding Society , vol . 9 : 11-14 . March , 1930 .

Heat transmission . During the greater part of the past year the
committee on heat transmission has maintained three research fel-
lows working at Harvard University , at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology , and at Cornell University , upon heat transfer in oils ,
