“Assessing English language proficiency of grade 10 students: Basis
for crafting intervention"
Part I: SITUATION
The study focuses on designing an assessment tool to measure students’
English language proficiency for monitoring students progress and in
designing an intervention plan to bridge the gap between the desired
proficiency level and their actual proficiency level. It was noted that the
previous language assessment conducted by the division office known as
Division Achievement Test (DAT) Balingoan District scored only 56.10% and
we ranked 22nd out of 35 participating districts in the entire division. By
crafting our own assessment tool, it will allow teachers to monitor progress
and plan necessary measures in bridging the gap.
Part II: INTERVENTION
It is always an integral part of teaching that teachers need to assess
students learning in order to identify whether they learned something or not.
The study was also focused on crafting an assessment tool to be used to
assess students’ progress.
A structured questionnaire for English 10 was floated among grade 10
students of Balingoan district that aims to identify the proficiency level of its
students in English. The questionnaire was composed of 3 macro skills
English as the target of the assessed. The result gathered in the study
showed that the students scored very low and all of the categories of the test
remarks low proficiency to not proficient at all. This implies that further
assessment must be conducted to monitor the progress of the students. The
teachers in both schools were also informed of the result in order for them to
plans and strategies to help students bridge the gap of the desired level of
English proficiency and their current English proficiency level.
Part III: SUMMARY
The study focuses on the strategic assessment in identifying English
proficiency of the students and provide interventions to aid the gap between
what the students level and between the level of competence for their level.
The need to monitor and to improve teaching practices is an important
measure in addressing learning gaps among students. Every school aims to
produce graduates that are equipped with enough competence in the English
language and can apply their learnings in a real world situations. It is an
integral duty of a teacher to design assessment procedures and action plans
to address issues and concerns in the acquisition of desirable level of
competence in English. As we move forward, these findings offer a valuable
basis for teachers and researchers to improve English language teaching.
This ensures students have the essential language skills for success in their
academic pursuits and future endeavors.
