ABSTRACT
Maternal and child health services is an aspect of modern health care designed for the health
promotion of the mother and child. This research study was designed to assess the utilization of
maternal and child health services among pregnant mothers in attending primary health care centers in
Neni, Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State. The objective of the study aimed at accessing
the practice of maternal and child health services, to determine the factors hindering the practice of
MCH services and to explore the benefit of the practice of MCH services. A descriptive survey method
was used and the target population was ten thousand (10,000) pregnant mothers at Neni, Anaocha
Local Government Area, Anambra State. Sample size of one hundred and twenty (120) was determined
using simple random sampling technique. A self-structured questionnaire was used to collect data and
the data was analyzed using frequency and Percentage. The major findings showed that majority of the
respondent practice MCH services, though a greater percentage practice regular ANC visits and
immunization. Some of the respondent faced challenges in accessing MCH services such as cost and lack
of partner support. Based on the findings, recommended and suggestion were made by the researcher
which include primary health care-based health education during antenatal services, should make
emphasis on the need of pregnant mothers to practice other MCH services apart from regular ANC visits,
also midwives in primary health care centers should partner with non- governmental organizations to
subsidize the cost of accessing MCH services, so as to make it affordable.
KEYWORDS: MCH services, Family Planning, Antenatal services, Immunization.
