SECTION D CASE BASED QUESTIONS
Q21 What we know today as Germany Italy and Switzerland were divided into
kingdoms, Duchies and Cantons whose rulers had their autonomous territories.
Eastern and the central Europe were under autocratic monarchies within the
territories of which lived diverse people. They did not see themselves as
sharing a collective identity or a common culture. ofen ,they even spoke
different language and belonged to different ethnic groups. The Habsburg
Empire that ruled over Austria -Hungry for example, was a patch work of many
different regions and peoples. It included the Alpine region-the Tyrol, Austria
and the Sudeten land -as well as Bohemia, where the aristocrat was
predominantly German speaking. It also includes the Italian -speaking
provinces of Lombardy and the venetia.
In Hungry, half of the population spoke Magyar while the other half spoke a 1
variety of dialects. In Galicia, the aristocracy spoke Polish. Beside these three 2
dominant groups, there also lived within the boundaries of the empire, a mass 1
of the subject peasant people Bohemians and Slovaks to the North, Slovenes
in Carniola, coasts ot the south and Romans to the East in Transylvania. Such
difference did not easily promote a sense of political unity. The only tie binding
these diverse group together was a common allegiance to the emperor.
1) Which areas were included in Habsburg empire ?
2)Why were Germany ,Italy and Switzerland not a Nation -state till mid
eighteenth century ?
3) Mention the languages spoken by the people of Habsburg Empire .
Q22 Power sharing arrangements can also be seen in the way political parties,
pressure groups and movements control or influence those in power. In a
democracy, the citizens must have freedom to choose among various
contenders for power. In contemporary democracies, this takes the form of
competition among different parties. Such competition ensures that
power does not remain in one hand. In the long run, power is shared
among different political parties that represent different ideologies and
social groups. Sometimes this kind of sharing can be direct, when
two or more parties form an alliance to contest elections. If their
alliance is elected, they form a coalition government and thus share
power. In a democracy, we find interest groups, such as those of
traders, businessmen, industrialists, farmers and industrial workers. They also
will have a share in governmental power, either through participation in
governmental committees or bringing influence on the decision-making
process.

(1) What does competition among different parties ensure ? 1

(2) How are interest groups associated with politics ?
(3) Explain the different forms of power sharing. 1

Q23 Intensive industrialisation and urbanisation witnessed in post-independence

India have significantly contributed to the exploitation of available freshwater
resources. Industries require huge supply of water for production, cooling of
machineries and for power supply in the form of hydroelectricity. Ever
increasing urban centres with large and dense population and urban lifestyles
have increased the domestic water requirement and power requirement.
Individual groundwater pumping devices in the housing complexes of big cities
have aggravated the problem of depletion of water resources. Agricultural
progress in the post-independence era has also led to water scarcity. Irrigation
in different forms to increase agricultural production exploits the available
surface and groundwater sources excessively. As a result of the 2
above-mentioned reasons the water shortage problem has aggra The vated in
post-independence India. 2

1.Why has the water shortage problem aggravated in post-independence India?

2. Why is the Rainwater harvesting system a viable alternative with reference to
water scarcity?
