Juan Cabrera is a farmer. His farm is in Mexico. He works in the fields every day. His son, Tomas, is three years
old. Tomas always goes to the fields with his father. Mr Cabrera works and Tomas plays.
One day they were in a field and Tomas disappeared. Mr Cabrera looked everywhere but he couldn’t find Tomas.
The Cabrera farm is near the United Sates- Mexican border. Mr Cabrera thought: ‘Maybe Tomas is now in the
United States.’ The U.S. Border Patrol officers started to look for Tomas in the United States. They were worried
because the area near the border is a desert. It is hot in the daytime and cold at night so a small boy can’t live long
there. One day later, they found Tomas under a small tree. He was cold, hungry and thirsty but he was alive. He was
24 km from his house.

Last year my family and I went to Scotland on a sightseeing tour. First, we visited the beautiful, old city of Edinburgh,
the capital city. We loved it! Then, we travelled northwest through this mountainous, historic region. We passed the
imposing Stirling Castle, where many Scottish kings and queens were crowned, including the famous Mary, Queen of
Scots. We saw The British Isles’ highest mountain at 1,334 meters: Ben Nevis. We moved on to Inverness where we
enjoyed spectacular views of Loch Ness. This lake is incredibly deep and famous for Nessie, the Loch Ness monster.
We spent approximately 2 hours there on a boat. We took lots of photos trying to get one with the head of Nessie,
emerging from the water, but it didn’t appear! It was very cold so we could not go swimming or diving. We bought lots
of souvenirs at a modern visitor centre next to the ruins of an ancient castle. It was a fascinating trip.

It’s now lunch break at school, but the students are working. Some students are playing the guitar together and

The Brit School is a special arts school for 14-19 year olds who want to work in music, theatre, dance or design. The
school is state-funded: the students don’t pay any money to go to the school. The students have an obligation to
study very hard. ‘People think we have lots of fun here and sing and dance all day’ says Tania, a 15-year-old
student, ‘but there are also a lot of subjects: IT, French, English, Science, History, and much more!’
The Brit School opened in 1991 and it now has some very famous old students: Adele, Katie Melua, The Krooks
and Athlete all went to The Brit School.

Chicago is next to a big, beautiful lake, Lake Michigan. In the summer this lake is warm and blue, but in the winter it is
cold and grey. Snow covers the beaches and ice covers the water.
On a cold January day last year Jimmy and his father were playing in the snow on a beach by the lake. Jimmy was four
years old. He pushed a board down a hill and it went onto the ice of the lake. Jimmy ran after it. He ran onto the ice, but
suddenly, the ice broke and he fell into the cold water. His father jumped into the water and pulled Jimmy out after
twenty seconds. Later, at the hospital, doctors put Jimmy in bed and gave him some medicine. They wanted Jimmy to
sleep. After two days Jimmy was better. He is a strong little boy.

the violin. In her first lesson, she was so happy! Her dad, Gio, was always at work. He was very responsible. When
he was young his parents didn’t have money and he wanted a very good life for Nicola and her sister.
Nicola’s dad is a businessman, but she’s an artist. Money isn’t very important to her, but it is for Gio. He likes the

Karate is a very popular sport among teenagers in Britain. Stacy McCarthy and Jonathan are fifteen years old. They’re
junior karate champions. People think that karate is easy, and that after one training lesson you can be really good. But
it’s not like that at all. ‘I started when I was six,’ says Stacy. ‘There are a lot of rules to remember. You need to
practise a lot.’ The karate belt system is long and difficult. Beginners wear a white belt. After six months they can
take an exam for the next level, the red belt. Then, there are five more belts.
Is it a difficult life for the junior karate champions? ‘We usually come to the club three times a week for training, but
when we’re preparing for a tournament, we practise every day.’ What about their free time? Stacy says: ‘We haven’t
got a lot of free time, but I sometimes go to the cinema with friends.’ Jonathan also plays tennis and football at school
on Tuesday and Thursday. He loves sports. He’s very good at them!

In the summer this lake is warm and blue, but in the
winter it is cold and grey. Snow covers the beaches and ice covers the water.
On a cold January day last year, Jimmy and his father were playing in the snow on a beach by the lake. Jimmy was
four years old. He pushed a board down a hill and it went onto the ice of the lake. Jimmy ran after it. He ran onto
the ice, but suddenly, the ice broke and he fell into the cold water. His father jumped into the water and pulled
Jimmy out after twenty seconds. Later, at the hospital, doctors put Jimmy in bed and gave him some medicine.
They wanted Jimmy to sleep. After two days Jimmy was better. He is a strong little boy.
