INTRODUCTION

 We the students of M.Sc. Nursing 1 st year (Child Health Nursing) at Govt. Nursing College, Shri Lal
Bahadur Shastri Govt. Medical College & Hospital, Nerchowk visited CRC Sundernagar, Mandi (An
institute for physically challenged children) as per partial fulfilment of our criteria of Paediatric nursing
under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Veena Ranaut, Reader cum Associate Professor at Govt.
Nursing College, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Govt. Medical College & Hospital, Nerchowk on dated 24
January,2024 (Wednesday).
 We reached there at 11: 00 AM as permitted by the principal of CRC Sundernagar.
 Firstly we met Mrs. Neelam Lagwal, Principal of CRC Sundernagar.
 Principal mam welcomed us and enlightened us with the establishment, staffing pattern, strength of the
students and various services and therapies that are provided to the students with in the institution.
 After providing this information Principal mam along with one teacher gave us the orientation of CRC
Sundernagar.
 After ward Principal mam gathered all the students in their ground and gave us time to interact with
students.
 As all the students were girls, so we provided them health education on the topics i.e. Menstrual Hygiene
and the hand washing techniques.
 After providing health education a recreational session was planned in which students sang various
songs in their melodious voice.
 Along with recreational session we gave them refreshment.
BACKGROUND OF CRC SUNDERNAGAR
 The Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation & Empowerment of Persons with
Disabilities, Sundernagar is an extension of the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with
Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD ).
 It was established in 2001 to extend services that cater to multiple and diverse disabilities, under one
roof.
 Today, it is fully-equipped and functional to provide rehabilitative and educational services to all types
of disabilities.
 Located at Sundernagar, 27 kms from Mandi district amidst the scenic backdrop of the Shivalik Ranges
in Himachal Pradesh (HP), CRC offers end-to-end solutions for the differently-abled in HP and the
neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana.
 With services that range from the academic to clinical, it continues to be committed to further the cause
of the differently-abled.
 CRC believes that a person may be physically disabled, but there is nothing to impair the spirit for life,
to live well and to live with dignity.
VISION
 The National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIEPVD ) is at the forefront of championing the
cause of the visually impaired, through concerted efforts that educate, rehabilitate and empower them.
 Working under the aegis of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India,
NIEPVD is dedicated to preserve and promote the rights and dignity of the visually disabled.
 Year after year, the Institute churns out professionally qualified & trained personnel to provide best-in-
class education, vocational training and rehabilitative services to the visually handicapped.
 In fact, NIEPVD is the largest producer & distributor of Braille literature and devices including speech
books, in the country.
 NIEPVD is also actively engaged in Research and Development for the formulation of disability-
inclusive policies, programmes and practices.
 The Institute is known to have devised several tools and technologies that have enabled and ensured
equal participation by visually impaired persons across the board.
MISSION
To serve as the Composite Regional Centre for rehabilitation and special education of persons with
disabilities. To establish linkages with existing medical, educational, and employment services following the
principles of community-based rehabilitation, and offer extension services in the rural areas.
OBJECTIVES
The primary objective of CRC is to create the requisite infrastructure for training, manpower development,
research and to provide services to persons with disabilities. The scope of services extend to Himachal
Pradesh and the adjoining states of Punjab and Haryana. CRC functions as the outreach centre of the
National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities and facilitates the process of
capacity building at local levels, in the region.
The main objectives are :
 To serve as the Composite Regional Centre for rehabilitation and special education of persons with
disabilities.
 To establish linkages with existing medical, educational, and employment services following the
principles of community-based rehabilitation, and offer extension services in the rural areas.
 To stimulate growth of services by encouraging and supporting voluntary organizations, parent groups
and self- help groups.
 To undertake human resource development by training rehabilitation professionals, village level
workers, multi-rehabilitation workers and other functionaries in the government and non-government
sector required for providing services to persons with disabilities.
 To develop strategies for delivery of rehabilitation services suitable to the socio-cultural background of
the region.
 To undertake research and development with specific reference to the needs of diverse groups of people
with disability, keeping in view the nature and severity of disability in the region.
 To undertake public education programme for the creation of awareness among parents and the
community.
 To undertake designing, fabrication & fitment of aids and appliances.
 To undertake services of education and skill development, leading to enhancement of opportunities for
employment, rehabilitation, mobility, communication, recreation and integration in society.

teaching faculty.

 As the institution is well equipped with total capacity of 150 students.
 At present there are 147 girl students in the institution.
SERVICES PROVIDED TO THE TEACHERS AT CRC
ACADEMIC SERVICES
Academic Services are imparted under 2 categories: Short-term and Long-term courses.
A. Short-term Courses: Short-term training courses are extended to various stakeholders like, teachers who
work in regular schools, anganwadi workers, health workers, paramedical staff, PwDs, Village Pradhan’s,
Government functionaries etc. These courses are especially conducted in order to create mass-level
awareness.
B. Long-term Courses :CRC conducts the following RCI-approved long-term courses :
 Diploma in Special Education (Hearing Impairment).
 Diploma in Special Education (Mental Retardation).
 Diploma in Special Education (Visual Impairment).
 Diploma in Special Education (Cerebral Palsy).
CLINICAL SERVICES
As part of its clinical services, CRC conducts Composite Rehabilitation Camps in several parts of Himachal
Pradesh. The scope of its outreach activities includes providing assistive devices, aids and appliances under
the ADIP scheme at the Centre and in camps. CRC also has a dedicated prosthetic and orthotic workshop
wherein artificial limbs/aids and splints are manufactured and fitted to the patients.
SERVICES PROVIDED TO THE STUDENTS AT CRC
Services that pertain to the special education and rehabilitation for persons with disabilities are categorized
as under :
a) Early detection and Intervention :
 Case finding
 Diagnostic assessment and evaluation
 Consultation to parents and referral
 Infant stimulation
 Home management programme for care and management of the disabled child
b) Rehabilitation :
 Treatment of epilepsy and hyper-kinetic behaviour.
 Treatment for associated medical conditions
 Genetic counselling
 Mobility training Referral for surgery wherever applicable. Audio logical assessment and prescription of
hearing aids.
 Low vision aids and appliances
 Therapeutic services of physiotherapy and occupational therapy
c) Mobility Aids and Assistive Devices :
 Fabrication of aids and appliances
 Fitment of aids and appliances
 Follow up services, repair of fitted aids
 Development of functional aids and appliances
d) Special Education Services :
 Individualized educational assessment and programming.
 Centre-based and home-based special education and training
 Referral for integrated education programmes
 Referral to special school
 Act as resource centres for integrated/special education
 Training of teachers
 Teaching materials and educational aids
e) Psycho-social Rehabilitation :
 Individual assessment, guidance and counselling

 Recreational activities and promotion of social clubs
 Organization of sports, art, drama, music, cultural and extra-curricular activities
 Championing for the rights of persons with disabilities
 Creation of awareness and public education.
HEALTH EDUCATION PROVIDED BY US
MENSTRUAL HYGIENE
MENSTRUATION : Girls typically start to menstruate (‘the time of menarche’) during puberty or
adolescence, typically between the ages of ten and 19.
 At this time, they experience physical changes (eg growing breasts, wider hips and body hair) and
emotional changes due to hormones.
 Menstruation continues until they reach menopause, when menstruation ends, usually between their late
forties and mid fifties.
 Menstruation is also sometimes known as ‘menses’ or described as a ‘menstrual period’.
 The menstrual cycle is usually around 28 days but can vary from 21 to 35 days.
 The bleeding generally lasts between two and seven days, with some lighter flow and some heavier flow
days.
 The cycle is often irregular for the first year or two after menstruation begins.
POTENTIAL RISKS TO HEALTH OF POOR MENSTRUAL HYGIENE
1. Unclean sanitary pads/materials Bacteria may cause local infections or travel up the vagina and enter the
uterine cavity.
2. Changing pads infrequently Wet pads can cause skin irritation which can then become infected if the
skin becomes broken.
3. Insertion of unclean material into vagina Bacteria potentially have easier access to the cervix and the
uterine cavity.
4. Wiping from back to front following Makes the introduction of bacteria from the bowel into the vagina
urination or defecation (or urethra) more likely.
5. Unsafe disposal of used sanitary materials Risk of infecting others, especially with Hepatitis B (HIV and
other or blood Hepatitis viruses do not survive for long outside the body and pose a minimal risk except
where there is direct contact with blood just leaving.
HOW TO MANAGE YOUR FIRST PERIOD?
Talk to other girls and women, such as your teachers, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, female friend or an
older woman in your community.
Don’t be afraid.
 It can be scary to see the blood on your underwear, but it is normal and natural.
 If you are at school, tell the matron, a female teacher or a fellow student.
 Feel proud! Your body is developing into that of a young woman.
How to capture the blood:
 Place a cloth, pad, cotton or tissue on your underwear.
 Never insert the material inside your vagina.
 Change the cloth, pad, cotton or tissue every two to six hours or more frequently if you think that the
blood flow is getting heavy.
DISPOSE OF THE CLOTH, PAD, COTTON OR TISSUE
 If you are re-using a cloth, put it into a plastic bag until you can wash it with hot water and soap and then
dry it in the sunshine or iron it.
 If you are using a pad, tissue or cotton, or want to dispose of your cloth, wrap it in paper to make a clean
package and put it in the bin so it can be burned later.
KEEP YOURSELF CLEAN DURING YOUR PERIOD
 Every day (morning and evening if possible) wash your genitals with soap and water.
 Keep unused cloths and pads clean (wrapped in tissue or plastic bag) for further use.
 Pat the area dry with a cloth, and put a fresh cloth, pad, cotton or tissue on your underwear.
 Always wipe from front to back after defecation.
MANAGEMENT THE STOMACH PAIN FROM YOUR PERIOD
 You can put a bottle with hot water on your stomach area when you are resting.
 Try to do some exercises and keep your body active.
HAND HYGIENE
Hand washing (or handwashing), also known as hand hygiene, is the act of cleaning one's hands with soap
or hand wash and water to remove viruses/bacteria/microorganisms, dirt, grease, or other harmful and
unwanted substances stuck to the hands.
KEY TIMES FOR HAND WASHING
 Before and after eating food.
 Before and after caring for someone who is sick with vomiting or diarrhoea.
 Before and after treating a cut or wound
 After using the toilet.
 After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
 After touching garbage.
HAND WASHING PROCEDURE

 Wet hands under tepid running water.


 Apply enough soap to cover all surfaces.
 Rub hands palm to palm.
 Rub back of each hand with palm of other hand with fingers interlaced.
 Rub hands with fingers interlaced.
 Rub with back of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked.
 Rub each thumb clasped in opposite hand using a rotational movement.
 Rub tips of fingers in opposite palm in a circular motion.
 Rub each wrist with opposite hand.
 Rinse hands thoroughly with running water.
 Use elbow to turn off tap.
 Dry thoroughly with single-use towel.
CONCLUSION
The Composite Regional Centre is an extension of the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped
(NIVH). It was established in 2001 to extend services that cater to multiple and diverse
