PARTS OF A MOTHERBOARD

To identify and explain the functions of the main

components of a motherboard and understand
how these components interact within a computer
system.

OBJECTIVE
WHAT IS A MOTHERBOARD?
Serves as a single platform or the main circuit board to
connect all of the parts of a computer together. A
motherboard connects CPU, memory, hard drives, optical
drives, video card, sound card, and other ports and
expansion cards directly or via cables. It can be considered
as the backbone of a computer.

WHAT IS A MOTHERBOARD?
Typically, the motherboard contains the CPU, BIOS, memory,
mass storage interfaces, serial and parallel ports, expansion
slots, and all the controllers required to control standard
peripheral devices, such as the display screen, mouse,
keyboard, and disk drive.

1. CPU SOCKET
Is a portion in the motherboard which holds the processor
(central processing unit).

2. MEMORY (RAM) HOLDER OR SLOT
This is the slot where you will insert the memory module or
memory card. Some motherboard comes with two to four
slots. Aside from the motherboard specification, looking at
the memory slots would help you to know which type of
memory card is compatible.

3. POWER SUPPLY CONTROLLER
Is the portion where you can connect the PSU cable
connector to supply power to the motherboard.
Motherboards come with different power supply controller.
Old motherboard needs AT power supply unit while new
motherboard needs ATX power supply

4. NORTHBRIDGE CHIPSET
This chipset handles the data-transfer duties of memory,
CPU, and PCIE and to make the most efficient use of
available resources.

5. SOUTHBRIDGE CHIPSET
The southbridge is the chip that controls all of the
computers I/O functions, such as USB, audio, low speed PCI
and ISA, the system BIOS, the ISA bus, the SATA or IDE
channels. In other words, all of the functions of a processor
except memory, PCI and AGP.
