The accidental adventure
Like a lot of young people, I left school at 18 with a place at college ready and waiting and that meant I could
put off starting for a year. Going traveling on a gap year is very popular here in the UK, and I didn’t want to
miss out on that opportunity. All my friends were planning various trips together, but I decided to go on my
own. This would turn out to be both a good thing at times, and something which I regretted at others.
Before setting off on this trip, I had only ever been abroad once to spend the summer with a family friend in
Provence, in France. I’d enjoyed my few weeks in France, brushing up my French language skills and going
on long bike rides in the countryside, but I wouldn’t have said it was a very adventurous vacation. The only
brave thing I did was try some foods I’d never eaten before, like duck paté! So, it was quite exciting to think
I’d be spending a whole year on the road, traveling through dozens of different countries and working here
and there to fund the journey. It was going to be the trip of a lifetime. And so it was, just not in the way
I’d imagined.
I had everything pretty well planned for my travels, including arranging some jobs in tourist resorts to make
sure I didn’t run out of money. But, as they say, the best-laid plans are the ones that fall apart the easiest!
And that’s what happened to me. Each disaster set off the next one. What started with missing a plane, led to
losing a job, and then with the little money I had left, I took the cheapest bus I could find. As luck would have
it, the bus broke down on the way and then I had to walk, and on and on it went. What a disaster!
It was a miracle that I didn’t come to any harm, I suppose. But the truth is that it worked out better as a
trip for me in many ways. My plans might have gone awry, but, if they hadn’t, I wouldn’t have met so many
wonderful people or stayed in as many lovely villages or seen such stunning landscapes. I didn’t mean for any
of it to happen, but I’m very glad it did.
1 It’s unusual for British students to spend a year traveling. True / False
2 The writer hadn’t done much foreign travel before taking a gap year. True / False
3 The writer intended to make money working while traveling. True / False
4 The writer hadn’t planned the trip before setting off. True / False
5 The writer regrets the bad experiences they had on the trip. True / False

B Read the text and write the answers in full sentences.
It’s all design!
My interest in fashion and design is something I inherited from my grandmother. She had skills that all women
had in her day but few have now. I was lucky to be able to learn them from her. First of all, she made all the
clothes for her own family when she was young. She didn’t do the designs herself because she used patterns.
However, she had to be inventive because materials were hard to come by in the war, and sometimes she had
to make dresses from curtains or a jacket from a blanket! She also made beautiful blankets of her own using
up all the bits of left-over wool she had in her basket. Her designs were very colorful. I learnt to knit and sew
from her, but I also learnt about color and how to be creative with materials. These are all useful skills now
that I work with creating fashionable clothing from recycled material!
When I was a teenager, I used to buy a lot of vintage clothing, and then with her help, we would make
alterations so they would fit me. Then I started blogging about the clothes I made. I’d put on fashion shows
with my friends wearing my creations, and I also started putting up videos online talking about some of the
techniques I used to turn an old-fashioned dress into something modern and special.
I knew that I wanted to study fashion and design, and I was lucky to get into the prestigious Central St
Martins School of Art and Design. That’s the same place that Stella McCartney studied at. For the four years
I was there, I really enjoyed the freedom to put what I’d learned into practice and the chance to really express
all my ideas about design.
Now I work with a sustainable fashion company, and it’s my job to come up with design concepts which are
new and innovative using recycled materials and vintage clothing. My philosophy is that we all need to wear
clothes, so there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be fun and express something about our personality. But at
the same time, like everything else, the fashion industry needs to be ethical and sustainable. I hope I’m doing
my bit.
1 Why are the writer’s grandmother’s skills unusual nowadays?
2 Why did the writer’s grandmother need to be inventive when she was making clothes?
3 What did the writer make videos about?
4 What did the writer enjoy about going to college?
5 What philosophy does the writer have about clothes?
