Short Office of The Holy Ghost
Short Office of The Holy Ghost
OF
The effect of prayer addressed to One Person of the Blessed Trinity, is not to put aside from our
view the other adorable Persons, but rather while giving great prominence, and increased
impressiveness, to the contemplation of the One, to enhance the power of apprehending the
mystery of the whole Godhead. It gives occasion, moreover, for the more vivid expression of
special needs and aspirations, as a natural consequence of contracting and intensifying the
soul’s energies.
A reason peculiar to our own times for more definite and intent devotion to God the HOLY
GHOST, is to be found in the lamentable defect of faith in Him as a Person, which prevails
everywhere, and the consequent absence of personal feelings of devotion towards Him.
The Office is not intended to supersede the “Day Hours,” nor for continual use, but for special
seasons, as Whitsuntide, or the Ember Weeks, or for private exercise at any time.
The plan of the Office is founded on an ancient form, but the composition of the details is new,
—It will be seen that a special devotion founded on some particular operations or gift of the
HOLY GHOST, is embodied in this devotion for each hour; and that these intentions are so arrange,
as to form a sequence exhibiting the progressive work of the SPIRIT in our sanctification.
The undersigned desires to bear witness to the love which designed and executed this little
work, as well as the benefit which he knows in numerous instances to have resulted from its use.
