ShatKarma is a group of six purification practices.

Shatkarma is used to balance the three doshas in the body: kapha (mucus); pitta (bile); and vata
(wind).

According to both ayurveda and hatha yoga, an imbalance in the doshas results in illnesses.

These six practices helps the sadhaka to prepare for meditation.

Neti

Neti is the process of cleansing and purifying the nasal passages. Practices included in this category
are: jala neti and sutra neti.

Benefits

1. Removes mucus and pollution from the nasal passages and sinuses
2. It alleviates anxiety, anger and depression, removes drowsiness and makes the head feel
light.
3. Helps to maintain a youthful appearance.
4. Improves the sense of smell.
5. Helps to awaken ajna chakra
6. Beneficial in relieving from Cough, cold, asthama and Bronchitis

Dhauti

Dhauti literally translates as ‘Washing’. In this kriya, different techniques are used to flush out toxins
and undigested food particles from internal organs.

Some common types of Dhauti are:-

1. Vaman Dhauti – Drinking large quantity of lukewarm water and then vomiting it out to
remove extra mucus from food pipe. Also called Kunjal Kriya.
2. Vastra Dhauti – In this kriya, a clean muslin cloth drowned in tepid water is swallowed & held
in the stomach for a few minutes. Then it’s pulled out from the mouth that brings out
impurities.

Benefits

Vaman Dhauti tone and stimulate all the abdominal organs by inducing strong muscular contractions
in the stomach walls. Excess mucus is removed, helping respiratory functions. These techniques help
to release pent-up emotions and emotional blocks or feelings of heaviness in the heart caused by
inner and external conflict and pressures.

Vastra Dhauti This practice removes stale gas and wind and stimulates the digestive system.

Basti

Techniques for cleansing the large intestine. It is of two types Jala Basti (with water) and sthal Basti
(with air)
Benefits

The colon is cleaned and purified. Old stool is removed and gas expelled. Advanced practitioners of
pranayama use basti to cool down the abdominal heat produced by their practices.

Cleans the colon and removes gas and wind.

Nauli

A method of massaging and strengthening the abdominal organs. Movement of lower abdomen
stimulates the digestive fire. Common types of nauli are Madhya Nauli, Vama nauli, Dakshina Nauli

Benefits

Nauli massages and tones the entire abdominal area, including the muscles, nerves, intestines,
reproductive, urinary and excretory organs. It generates heat in the body and stimulates appetite,
digestion, assimilation, absorption and excretion. It helps to balance the adrenal component of the
endocrine system. N auli stimulates and purifies manipura chakra, the store house of prana. It helps
to increase mental clarity and power by harmonizing the energy flows in the body.

Eases mensuration problem

Improves functioning of productive organ

Regulates and simulates digestion

Purifies liver

Kapalbhati

A breathing technique for purifying the frontal region of the brain. Kapal Bhati is of 3 types –
Vatkarma (air cleansing), VyutKarma (sinus cleansing with water sniffing from nose and expel
thorugh mouth), Sheet Karma (mucus cleansing with water from mouth and expel through nose)

Benefit

Vyutkrama and sheetkrama kapalbhati ren1ove mucus from the sinuses and help to relax the facial
muscles and nerves. Other effects, both physical and spiritual, are the same as for jala neti, but
intensified.

Strengthens lungs and abdominal

Oxygenates blood

Clears mind and control thoughts

Removes excess kapha

Purifies nerves and pranic channel


Trataka

The practice of intense gazing at one point or object which develops the power of concentration.
Types – internal (focus on third eye / ajna chakra) and external (gazing at external object like a diya
or bindu)

Benefit

This practice makes the eyes clear and bright. It balances the nervous system, relieving nervous
tension. It improves the memory and helps to develop good con centration and strong willpower. It
activates aj na chakra and is an excellent preparation for meditation.
