The charts below give information about travel to and from the UK, and about the most
popular countries
for UK residents to visit.
The line graph compares and contrasts data on changes in the number of people visiting to and from Great
Britain over a twenty-year period from 1979 to 1999. The bar chart highlights the top countries which
were visited by British people in 1999.
Overall, it is clear to see that the graph experienced an upward trend between these years. The chart
indicates a rise in the proportion of UK habitants travelling to five popular countries.
In 1979, the number of British people travelling abroad was about 12 million, before rising to about 20%
in 1984. Notably, in the remaining period, the figure rocketed approximately 2.5 times to 52 million.In
terms of travelers to the UK, 10 million overseas residents came to the UK in 1979, inching to roughly
13 million in 1984. Moreover, the figure almost doubled in 1999, reaching around 27 million.
The second chart shows that France was the most popular country, attracting about 12 million UK
visitors. Additionally, Spain was the second attractive destination, with around 9 million visits.
Meanwhile, other countries, namely Turkey, Greece and the USA had a lower proportion of UK residents
travelling to them, just under 5 million.
