Hi Friends! My name is Jason. I am eleven years old and I live in Chicago in
the USA. It is November and our special family holiday, Thanksgiving is coming.
This festival is on the fourth Thursday of November every year and this year it is
on 28th. There is no school on Thanksgiving Day and there is no school on Friday.
That’s great! We – our family – get together on Thanksgiving Day and invite our
friends. We always have a huge dinner. My mum makes a lot of food and I always
help her in the kitchen. We eat roast turkey, sweet potatoes (called yam), gravy,
corn, pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce. Before dinner, we give thanks to God for the things we have. I love this
holiday because all my family is together and we have a great time.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

habit. Acrobats must always practise and do acrobatic exercises. It takes a long time. My
favourite animals are monkeys and chimpanzees. I like the way they climb trees. I like the way
they swing from one tree to another. They are brilliant. My wife hates monkeys. When I watch
a documentary about monkeys, she changes the room. Also, I always watch competitions of
gymnastics. They all teach me lessons.
So, you want to be an acrobat, a cook or a mason? This is my advice for you: “Work and work
and then work again. You should practise nonstop”.

It’s Ok to eat fast food occasionally but fast food is high in
calories. So, if you often eat a hamburger and chips you can
easily become obese. You must eat homemade food because it
is healthier.

Everybody knows that fast food is cheap and quick.

However, fast food is not as tasty as homemade food. Young
people prefer to eat pizzas, hamburgers and French fries but
they should eat vegetables and fruit instead because they
contain fiber and vitamins. Fast food companies spend lots of
money to make people believe that fast food is cool. The
average American eats three hamburgers with French fries a
week. Is it surprising that 14% of American teenagers are obese? Health care is devoted to create
new eating habits so that we can have a healthier generation.

Obesity can lead to other diseases such as diabetes and heart strokes. This is why America is now
starting to fight back against the fast food companies. They are stopping serving fast food in school
cafeterias and restaurants serving traditional food are opening now.

GFAFFITI
1) Read the text about Graffiti art.
The term graffiti comes from the Greek word ‘graphein’ which means ‘to write’. People have always
drawn and painted on walls. Prehistoric man painted on the walls of caves, and those paintings are now
considered valuable works of art. Graffiti was first found on ancient Roman architecture.
If people draw on walls these days, it isn’t considered art; it is called ‘graffiti’ and often cleaned off as soon
as possible. Graffiti art takes a number of forms. It can be an individual mark, usually just the initials of the
artist, or something much larger, like a mural. Most graffiti artists prefer to be called ‘writers’. A writer’s
signature with spray paint or maker is called a ‘tag’, and each piece of graffiti art is ‘tagged’. Communities of
writers who are friends are known as ‘crews’, and inexperienced writers are called ‘toys’.
For some artists graffiti is a reaction to the circumstances of their lives, while for others it is a more thought-
out artistic expression. The motivation behind a piece of graffiti can be happiness or sadness, frustration or
relief. For this reason it is an art form that is very close to the hearts of the young.
Graffiti as a youth culture began in America but has become popular in many other countries.
Its influences come from pop culture, especially music and cartoons. Graffiti is now so popular;
it can be seen in many museums and art galleries.

Save the environment!

My name’s Maria. I’m twelve years old and I’m Brazilian. I live in Manaus, in Amazonia, the
biggest tropical forest in the world. My father is a biologist and he works there. He studies the
relationship between humans, trees and animals.
I like living here. I like music, animals, and collecting unusual stones I pick up when I go to the
forest with my father.
I don’t like seeing the destruction of the forest, plants, animals and indigenous people. Nature is
in danger all over the world. There are so many problems: the pollution of the air, ocean and
rivers, the destruction of the ozone layer, animals and plants in danger of extinction, fires, climate
changes and global warming are just some of them .We must start doing something to change
this situation. It begins with every one of us, at home, at school, everywhere. We must answer a
question: what can we do?
First we should reduce – for example – use less water when we shower or while we brush our
teeth. We can reuse some materials, like old clothes or shoes, right? And we should also recycle. I
recycle paper, glass, metal and plastic.
What about you?
Are you doing the three Rs?
We must help PROTECT THE PLANET!
