The Olympic Games is a famous competition where athletes from all over the world take part in many
different sports. The Olympics is the oldest sports competition in the world, the first was in Greece
nearly 3000 years ago! Today it happens every four years and changes country every time. In 2008 the

Olympics was in Beijing, China and in 2012 it will happen in London, England. Over 13,000 athletes
compete in twenty six different sports, for example, swimming, fencing, gymnastics and basketball.
Athletes have to be the best in their country if they want to compete in the Olympics, and they have to
train for many years to be ready. For some sports, such as athletics, thousands of spectators come to
watch in huge stadiums, to cheer for the athletes from their country.
