Biodiversity

Biodiversity encompasses genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity, reflecting the variety of life forms and their relationships within ecosystems. It is crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems, promoting sustainability, and enhancing recovery from disasters. However, biodiversity loss, characterized by species extinction and habitat degradation, poses a significant global challenge, with historical mass extinctions marking critical periods of ecological change.

BIODIVERSITY

Types of Biodiversity
Biodiversity describes the Genetic diversity:
difference and relationships Differences in DNA among
within the various ecosystem, Species diversity:
including all living organisms Variety of species in a
and their habitats. It may
given area
also mean the number of
different species living within
individuals
a particular region. Species diversity:
Variety of species in a
given area
Ecosystem diversity:
Variety of habitats,
ecosystems, communities

IMPORTANCE OF
BIODIVERSITY
Healthy biodiversity makes a healthy ecosystem. This means
there is a great variety of crops and greater species diversity.
Thus, there is a natural sustainability for all life forms, and
better chances of recovery from disasters.

BIODIVERSITY
LOSS
Biodiversity loss is one of the pressing issues of our time. This
is a worldwide concern. The scientist can determine that
biodiversity is being lost if the extinction of species, loss of
specific habitats, and a decrease or loss in the genetic
variations within species continue to occur.
Extinction
is a state when the entire population of species no longer exist.
Scientists refer to a species of animal or plant as extinct if the last of
its kind has already died.

Scientists believed that millions ago, populations of living species especially

marine life were lost because of extreme changes in the environment
brought by the movement of earth's crust, melting of glaciers, or
astronomical phenomena, the large losses of life within a specific time
period are called mass extinction. There is five massive extinction dating
back to prehistorical times identified by the Scientist.
The Five Worst Mass
Extinction
The Ordovician Silurian Extinction.

The Late Devonian Extinction

The Permian Triassic

Triassic-Jurassic/End Triassic

The Cretaceous-Tertiary
