INTRODUCTION
Cleaning generally refers to the removal of
impurities, dirt and stains. In housekeeping, it pertains to
the practice of maintaining the cleanliness of all areas,
equipment, machine, furniture, tools and linens. A good
housekeeping attendant must not only be knowledgeable
about the standard tools and equipment used in the
accommodation service industry but also know which
materials or equipment to use when performing specific
housekeeping task.

CLEANING PUBLIC AREAS IN THE HOTEL
Public areas of the hotel may be used and seen by guests all throughout the day. That is why the
cleanliness of these areas must be maintained.
The following are the different public areas of hotels and the corresponding cleaning paraphernalia
needed and the steps to be followed when cleaning them.
PUBLIC TOILET
This area of the hotel requires not only once or twice a day
cleaning but it should be often as needed. Most hotels today have
one housekeeping attendant assigned in toilet areas. Because
public toilets are one of the busiest part of any establishment,
maintaining its cleanliness is of prime importance. Clean toilets
create a lasting impression among hotel guests. Toilets are
cleaned to prevent contamination or the spread of bacteria.
The following are the tools needed in cleaning toilets:
Handy caddy that contain bottles of chemicals such as spray
bottles with disinfectant and cleaning cloths ( e.g. glass cloth,
swab and wipes, floor cloth, etc.)
Dust pan and sweeper
Acid cleaners for toilet bowls
Cleaning agents like toilet cleaners
Mop-wringer trolley and mop

Here are some tips on how to clean public toilets:
1. Each cubicle should be cleaned individually and
ensure the absence of residual body fluid on the
toilet rim. Spray disinfectant after mopping the floor
and replace empty toilet papers. Cleaned cubicles
should be left open for use.
2. Wipe and disinfect countertops and remove any
rubbish left.
3. Polish mirrors
4. Do not allow rubbish bins to overflow with sanitary
napkins and used tissue paper.
5. Male urinals should be cleaned inside and the surrounding area must also be disinfected.
6. Mop the floor beginning from the farthest cubicle going to the direction of the door.
BARS and RESTAURANT, and FUNCTION ROOMS
Restaurants and bars are areas where guests dine and enjoy drinks. These areas must be kept clean
to make the atmosphere pleasant to guests.
The tools and equipment needed are these:
Vacuum cleaner
Mop and bucket
Hand caddy
1. Clean these areas at least once every day or more depending on how often these areas are used.
2. Use appropriate cleaning materials and polish to clean windows and mirrors.
3. Inspect if floors are free from any marks and stains from polishing.
4. Polish and clean picture frames.
5. Wipe all light fittings. Make sure that they are in good condition.
6. Collect all rubbish and put it in the rubbish bag.
7. Make sure to keep floors shiny and free from spills. Use floor signs if needed.
PRIVATE LOUNGE AREA
This is a private room made available for guest use. This area serves multiple uses. It can be turned
into a VIP holding room, reading or gaming room depending on the need of the occasion. The cleanliness
and tidiness of this room must always be maintained.
Here are the tools and equipment needed:
Vacuum cleaner
Trolley with cleaning supplies
Feather duster
Sani-bins
Spray bottles
FOYER
This is one of the busiest area in the hotels. Thus, the whole area may not be closed for cleaning.
The challenge is to maintain this area clean and tidy because guests create lasting impression at the first
sight of the hotel foyer.
Below are the tools and equipment needed:
Dust mop
Mop bucket

Hand caddy
WALKWAYS and BALCONIES
Walkways are often used by guests as they go out and go back to their rooms.
The tools and equipment needed include the following:
Broom with hard bristles
Mop and bucket
Hose
Vacuum cleaner
ELEVATORS, STAIRWAYS and CORRIDORS
Elevators are cleaned late at night. It should be shut down with the door open. When cleaning the
elevator during day time and when guests walk in, cleaning must be stopped until they got out from the
elevator.
The tools and equipment needed to clean these areas are the following:
Vacuum cleaner
Mop and bucket
Hand caddy
GENERAL GUIDELINES IN CLEANING PUBLIC AREAS OF THE HOTEL
Take note of this procedure in cleaning other public areas of the hotel:
1. Collect all the rubbish found in the area.
2. Dust and polish wooden surfaces and furniture such as tables and
chairs.
3. When cleaning areas with spills, use a damp cloth.
4. Vacuum carpets exposed to dust and other rubbish.
5. Move pieces of furniture if necessary and fluff out cushions. However,
to be sure to return them in their original position.
6. When cleaning floors, hazards signs may be used to warn guests that
the floor is slippery or what not.
