Experiment No 2 Field Density by Core Cutter Method: by Mohammad Israil Mazhar Ali Syed Abu Rehan

The document outlines an experiment to determine the in-situ density of soil using the core cutter method, detailing the objective, apparatus, procedure, precautions, and results. The bulk density of the soil sample was found to be 1.451 g/c.c., while the dry density was determined to be 1.372 g/c.c. Additionally, moisture content was calculated for three samples, providing values of 5.376%, 6.667%, and 5.172%.

Experiment No 2

Field Density by Core cutter method

By
Mohammad Israil
Mazhar Ali
Syed Abu Rehan
Objective
 To determine the in-situ density of soil by core cutter
method
Apparatus
 Cylindrical core cutter  Spade
 Steel rammer  Knife
 Steel dolly  Moisture can
 Balance  Thermostatically controlled oven
Procedure
 Measure the height and internal diameter of the core cutter.
 Weight the empty core cutter.
 Clean and level the surface of soil where density is to be
determined.
 Place the core cutter on the soil surface with the cutting edge
downward and put the dolly on the top of core cutter. Press
the core cutter using the given steel rammer until it
penetrates into the ground to its full depth.
 Remove the soil from around the cutter by the spade.
 Lift the cutter, remove the dolly, trim off and level the top
and bottom surface of the soil sample.
Procedure
 Clean the outside surface of the cutter.
 Weight the core cutter with soil.
 Remove the soil from the cutter and take three
representative samples from top, middle and bottom zones of
the soil in three different moisture cans to determine the
moisture content. Take average moisture content.
Precautions
 Before using the sieve set, clean the sieves with brush and
ensure that no particle is stuck in the mesh of the sieve
 Shaking should be done in all four directions as well as in
circles and when the sieves shaker is on, care should be taken
not to let the soil particles come out of the sieves.
 Take extra care while weighing the soil particles retained on
each sieve.
 For plotting the gradation curve, use 4-cycle semi-log graph
