Let Us Study

When you were in grade four, you have learned the features of
journalistic writing. You were even asked to write news and editorial articles.
This time you will undergo the exciting activities for feature writing.

A feature article is a detailed piece of writing which look at a variety of

issues, opinions, experiences, and ideas in actual situations. It is a data-
based discussion of an exact subject that touches the readers’ emotions.

Have you watched the TV shows “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Sojo” and “Rated
K”? Their shows feature different topics that are based on facts or that really
happened based on the interviews and the videos or photos shown. The stories
they present in their shows are examples of feature stories or articles.

Feature articles and literature are both forms of writing, enjoyed by the
public and have relative style. Study the differences and similarities between
literature and journalistic writing in the Venn diagram.

Let Us Remember
A feature article is a detailed piece of writing which look at a variety of
issues, opinions, experiences, and ideas in actual situations. It is a data-
based discussion of an exact subject that touches the readers’ emotions.

It deals with any topic and usually entertains more often than it
informs, instructs, or advise. The topic may be light or serious, depending on
its purpose, and may or may not be timely. You may use adjectives, figures of
speech, dialogue, anecdote, or idiomatic expressions.

When you write a feature article, consider the following:

• Write in short sentences and paragraphs and quickly gets to the point.
• Rely on facts and evidence to provides readers with accurate
information.
• Cite sources where the idea, data, facts, information are gathered
from.
• Use quotes and interviews to provide credibility.
• Avoid verbal deadwoods and redundant words.
• Use familiar, concrete, and precise words.

13
Some types of feature that will be easy for you do and understand are;
personality profile, a semi-biographical account of a newsworthy person;
personal experience which deals with any unusual experience, usually
written in the first person point of view; and human interest that involves
people and their experiences, troubles, failures, and successes in life.

In writing a feature article, you must consider its three basic parts; the
lead that sets the tone and mood and tells the readers the main point of a
feature story and should engage and invite the readers; the Body that
contains the arrangement of the story materials in a manner that will sustain
or hold the reader’s interest and flow smoothly from the introduction to the
end; and the Ending/Conclusion that must draw a lasting impression,
reminding the readers of the main point of the article. Do not forget to write a
catchy title relevant to your feature article.

Let Us Assess
Read the given personality profile feature of a man who created a
positive change in the lives of the community which he served. Make this
feature article as your guide.

Write a personality profile feature article about one of the members of

your family. Tell how he/she bravely faced the challenges brought by this
pandemic to keep your family safe and healthy, as well as his/her efforts to
continue bringing food on your table. Also include the positive changes, the
situation brought him/her.

Use the rubrics in Let Us Practice More for scoring. Write your feature
article on a separate sheet of paper.

Cape-less Hero
Mezhane Dareykiel M. Dalumpines

Reading about a hero in books or watching them in movies seems like an

ordinary thing but meeting one in real life is super amazing. This was my reaction
as we were visited in class by no less than the 2014 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee
himself, Sir Randy Halasan.
He was a school head who changed the lives not only of the indigenous
children in school but also the Matigsalog community in Pegalongan, Marilog
District. He is in fact featured in our English textbook as an educator who was
selfless in performing beyond what his duty called for.

“Being a hero today means having an initiative to change the lives of

others, especially the marginalized sectors. Be ready to serve and show
compassion without expecting any personal returns”, he explained in an interview
with the Brainstorm.

Presently serving as a commissioner on the Presidential Commission for

the Urban Poor (PCUP), he stressed that dying is not just a way of becoming a
hero and said that anyone can do big or small deeds if it touches the lives of
others.

“You should have positive attitude in everything you do, even poverty is not
a hinderance to your success. The government is providing free college education.
There are so many opportunities that await you so finish your school and study
hard,” Sir Randy strongly advised.
Because of this I realized that heroes are not just the rock-solid ones
displayed in the school grounds or those that have superpowers and fly, but some
of them are alive and continue to create better tomorrows for people in need.

Let Us Reflect
Enhancing your skills in writing a feature article equally helps you
develop your skills in thinking critically and writing creatively. Aside from
helping you enrich your vocabulary; it also makes you aware of the important
events around you and how to write about them to inform and entertain the
readers.

Writing an article that is factual and relevant to the lives of many

teaches you and the readers the facts and lessons of life. Your feature article
will inspire you and the readers because it can happen to anyone.

Moreover, it teaches you to do your research well and write its sources
properly in your article. It is a very important skill and will come in handy as
you continue learning in high school and in college.
