TYPHOONS
I. Overview
Typhoons are characterized by large masses of clouds, which spiral around a central point, or eye. It is
accompanied by very strong winds, heavy rains and large ocean waves.
The Philippines is situated within the typhoon belt. No less than 20 typhoons enter the Philippine Area
of Responsibility (PAR) every year. Weather conditions in the country is monitored by the Philippine
Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
II. Intended Learning Outcomes:
a. describe the changes in the weather before, during and after the typhoon;
b. enumerate the effects of a typhoon in a community;
c. enumerate the effects of the winds in a certain storm warning signal.

Typhoon
Weather Conditions in the Philippines
The Philippines is situated within the typhoon belt. No less than 20 typhoons enter the Philippine Area
of Responsibility (PAR) every year. The areas that are often hit by these typhoons are northern and eastern
Luzon, the Bicol regions, and, at times, some part of Mindanao.
Weather conditions in the country is monitored by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and
Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). When tropical cyclone or typhoon enters PAR, PAGASA gives
it a name for identification. The names given to typhoons follow the letters of the alphabet.
