Artificial Intelligence
How Does Narrow AI Work?
Narrow AI is a kind of smart computer good at doing one or a few jobs. It's not like
general AI, which can do a lot of things and act like a human. Narrow AI tries hard
to get a particular goal done by using special math tools that help it learn from
information. The kind of math tool it uses depends on the job it needs to do and
what kind of information it's looking at. One of those math tools is called machine
learning. It works by teaching the smart computer how to use information to make
good choices. First, the smart computer looks at some examples of information,
then it uses such information to help it decide what to do next.
There are different ways a smart computer can use machine learning. One way is
called "supervised learning." This means the smart computer looks at information
that's already been sorted into groups, and then it uses such information to sort new
things into the right groups too. For example, it might learn how to tell pictures of
cats from pictures of dogs.
Another way the smart computer can learn is called "unsupervised learning." This
means the smart computer looks at a bunch of information that hasn't been sorted
yet, and then it tries to figure out what group things belong to on its own. For
example, it might learn how to tell what things people like to buy online. The third
way the smart computer can learn is called "reinforcement learning." This means
the smart computer gets feedback on whether it did a good or bad job, and then it
learns from that feedback to make better choices next time. For example, it might
learn how to play a game by getting points for good moves and losing points for
bad moves.
