UNIVERSITY OF GHANA MEDICAL SCHOOL

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY
18th September 2024

CONGRATULATIONS!

Dear, Vivan Adjorlor Quaye

You have been selected to be a part of Psych Corps 2024/2025.

Psych Corps is one way of increasing access to mental health care in communities by increasing the
number of mental health care personnel (MHCPs).

The University of Ghana in conjunction with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), have welcomed a
number of graduates who have a strong background in psychology to participate in an innovative
national service programme called the Psych Corps. These students might have studied either Clinical
Psychology, Community Psychology, Social Psychology, Guidance and Counseling, or a combination of
any two of them. We are happy you are part of this Corps. You have been posted as your national
service to work with Community Psychiatric Nurses (CPNs), clinical psychologists or Medical
Assistants in Psychiatry (MAP) in your area of posting where you are to report for further instruction.

Report with a copy of this letter to be shown to the administrator and explain that you are to
work with the Clinical Psychologist (if available), Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN) and/or
Medical Assistants in Psychiatry (MAPs) in the mental health unit.

You are to help with

i. Identifying new mental health conditions and new cases in the community.
ii. Collecting data in the communities, with regard to how culture, customs, and behaviors affect the way
mental health is viewed.
iii. Maintain a proper record of information on the prevalence of mental illness within the community.
iv. Maintain a proper record of information on the health needs of people with mental illness in the
community.
v. Accompany CPNs when they conduct home visits within the communities.
vi. Trace non-complaint patients (people who do not come for Review appointments) and encourage
them to seek help.
vii. Carry out relevant educational talks within communities, in schools, and on local radio and TV (on
issues such as mental illness, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, sexual abuse, etc.)

The additional educational material for this project will be sent to you via your emails and has also
been uploaded on our Facebook page and it is advised that you get familiar with our content. (For
more information to support your work, visit, like and join our Facebook page Psych Corps Ghana).
