RURALSTUDY -

INTRODUCTION

The economy of India is largely agriculture based with 70% to 80% of the people living in rural
areas. Though agriculture is the main activity it is being neglected today due to the attraction of the urban
cities – job opportunities, medical facilities, education, etc. Rural areas have a very strong social and
cultural background in our country. This has to be identified and respected by the town planner and
architect when they attempt to reorganize the existing rural setting. Keeping this as background a rural
village is identified. A visit and detailed analysis of the village has to be made, proposal have to be given
for the betterment of the existing conditions.

This process will involve study of the – cultural, behavioral, religious, sentimental &
socioeconomic patterns. An attempt will also be made to trace out the history, origin & growth and
development of the settlement and in identifying the influencing factors like topography, geology,
climate, social structure, economic base, availability of building materials, natural resources, local crafts
& trade etc,. These factors not only influence the built environment –like the arrangement of definite
streets & communal open spaces, but also the nature of house types and further articulate the environment
that man created for himself.

OBJECTIVE

To make the student understand how a human settlement evolves and sustains itself in the
environment to which it belongs. Problems related to Rural Housing, surveys on socio-economic,
physical, housing and surveys, etc. to study existing conditions - analysis of survey data - preparation of
report and presentation in a seminar - preparation of design brief solutions for housing and community
facilities.

The study is divided into 3 stages

Stage I – Analysis-Surveys, Study & Documentation

Stage II –Issues Identification.

Stage III – Proposal

The class will be divided into groups under each stage, they need to conduct surveys and carry on the
documentation part as briefed below in the problem, compile them, and form conclusions which will
be the guiding factor for the physical design.
