FUNDAMENTALS OF PETROLUEM GEOLOGY
26 28 October 2009, Kuala Lumpur
ABOUT THE COURSE
This course is targeted at reservoir engineers, petroleum engineers, drilling engineers, petrophysicists, facilities and processing engineers and any other professional who needs grounding in petroleum geological fundamentals. Participants will acquire an understanding of the geological principles employed to find, develop and produce oil and gas reservoirs, the type of data required to build a model of the subsurface, and the different methods used to display information. The value and limitations of different data sources will be discussed. Emphasis is placed on the operational and applied aspects of petroleum geology. The course will demonstrate how appropriate use of geological
information can lead to better management decisions and thus improve the value of oil and gas projects.
Learning Objectives To provide participants with the foundations of all aspects of Petroleum Geology. To explain the principles and methods employed by geologists during exploration, development and production of hydrocarbon reservoirs.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND Drilling and well engineers working with geology data and geologists Reservoir engineers and petrophysicists working in reservoir modelling, well planning, reservoir surveillance and subsurface asset management Geophysicist Graduate or junior geologists new to the industry ABOUT FRANK JAHN Frank Jahn has worked in the oil and gas industry for 25 years, gaining experience with major oil companies, petroleum engineering consultancies, engineering and design houses and as an independent petroleum consultant. He is also co-author of Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production; Developments in Petroleum Science 46, 394 pp, Elsevier 1998 During ten years in Shell International he worked as wellsite petroleum engineer and later as operations and production geologist in Brunei, Thailand, Holland, and the UK, gaining experience in subsurface evaluation, field development planning and the management of producing assets. For two years he worked as Production Geology lecturer in the Groups training centre and also conducted courses in Turkey, Nigeria and Malaysia; he left Shell in 1991 to work as a petroleum consultant and in 1992 became co-founder of TRACS International, providing training and technical consultancy. His work in TRACS included technical and commercial evaluations of assets in the FSU, Libya, Egypt and the North Sea. Since 2003 he works as an independent petroleum consultant and has designed and taught multidisciplinary field development and asset management modules for clients in Malaysia, Indonesia, the US, Canada, Australia, India and the Middle East. He is currently based in the UAE. From 2002 to 2006 he served as a visiting lecturer and research associate working on the commercialisation of marginal fields at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia.
