GROUND RULES/DRESS CODE FOR TAU
STUDENTS

Dear Esteemed students.


It is very important to bring to your knowledge, the approved dress code and items
expected of you as you prepare for a new academic session which are stipulated
in the Students’ Handbook. It is your duty and responsibility as law abiding
students to ensure full compliance. The University as you know attaches great
importance to modest and corporate dressing. While maintaining good taste of
high morality and modesty, the appearance of our students should be characterized
by neatness, purity, cleanliness, decency and simplicity. It should be borne in
mind that dressing adds value and responsiveness to a person, because the way a
person dresses, is the way he/she will be addressed. Since cleanliness is next to
Godliness, TAU students are not expected to put on dirty, rough, tight, faded,
tattered, transparent, jeans, dresses with obscene inscriptions, pictures, Skimpy
dresses or sexually provocative dresses are not allowed on our campuses.
The following regulations are applicable at all times to all students:
DRESS CODE FOR MALE STUDENTS
1. Male students must be corporately dressed at the Faculty building (lectures),
examinations, public lectures, special ceremonies such as Orientation,
Matriculation, Convocation and other University functions/Assemblies..
To be corporately dressed is to wear a:
2. Shirt tucked into a pair of trousers with a NECK TIE, with or without a
jacket, waist-coat and a blazer with a pair of neat covered shoe or sandals;
3. Fastening of trousers below the waistline (sagging) is not allowed;
4. Wearing of long-sleeved shirts without buttoning the sleeves or folding of
the sleeves is not allowed;
5. Shirt collars should not be left flying;
6. Use of face caps in the lecture/ examination halls are strictly prohibited;
7. Wearing of body hugs and revealing wears are not allowed;
8. Wearing of T-shirts and Jersey- tops to lectures are not allowed;
9. No male student is allowed to pierce any part of the body;
10.No use of jeans dresses unless otherwise approved for a special occasion;
11. No male student is allowed to wear dreadlocks, plaited hair, tinted
Hair or jerry curls on the campus;
12. Wearing of beard, moustache or goatee is not allowed. All male
students must maintain low-cut hair combed regularly and clean-shaven
beards;
13. Smart native wears are permitted only on Fridays;
14. No wearing of shorts to lecture/examinations and all University
assemblies/functions;
15.All forms of slippers are not allowed to lectures/examinations and in
all University assemblies/functions.

DRESS CODE FOR FEMALE STUDENTS

16.Female students must be corporately dressed at lectures, examinations,


public lectures, special ceremonies such as Orientation, Matriculation,
Convocation and other University functions/Assemblies.
To be corporately dressed is to wear a:
(i) smart skirt and blouse/shirt with a pair of neat covered shoe or
sandals;
(ii) pant trousers and shirt/ blouse with a pair of neat covered shoe or
sandals;
(iii) smart gown with a pair of neat covered shoe or sandals;
(iv) blouse jacket and skirt/pant trousers with a pair of
neat covered shoe or sandals;
17.All dresses/skirts should be below the knee;
18.Strapless blouses, over-clinging/tight fitting dresses, hip-stand trousers,
revealing blouses such that do not cover the navel as well as transparent
dresses are not allowed in the University environment;
19.T-shirts and Jersey- tops are not allowed for normal lectures, examination
and University Academic functions/occasions. They are regarded as
casual wears;
20.Smart native wears are permitted only on Fridays;
21.No wearing of shorts (knicker burger) outside the hostels except for sports.
22.Pyjamas, nightgowns and bathroom slippers are not allowed outside the
halls of residences;
23.All forms of slippers are not allowed to lectures/examinations and all
University functions/assemblies;
24.Hair style should be moderate without coloured/tinted hair, attachment or
weavon. Hair-style with braids must not extend beyond mid-back length.
The approved colour are black and natural brown. The same applies to
wigs;
25. No female student should pierce any part of the body other than
the ear for ear rings;
26. Body tattooing is strictly prohibited;
27. Coloured/painted nails and bleaching are not allowed;
28. Moderate use of jewellery is allowed;
29. No use of jeans dresses unless otherwise approved for special occasion;
30. Fixing of artificial materials like eye lashes, nails and other unapproved
materials in the University remain prohibited.

GENERAL RULES
1. No use of hot plate/boiling ring or cooking utensils, electrical heir
straightener of any kind by any student of the University;
2. Use of phone at the faculty building and Library of the University between
8:00am-3:00pm is prohibited;
3. Use of non TAU (other) produced sachet/bottled water is NOT allowed;
4. Buying/supply of cooked food from any place other than the TAU
Campuses by students is NOT allowed;
5. No student is allowed to engage in sales of any item in the University
without the due approval of the Students’ Care Services;
6. Use of bottle as container is prohibited from being used to package
anything eg. (groundnut, pea nut, chin-chin etc), by the students;
