Jack the Ripper

Ángel Darío Pedreros Rojas

Introduction.
The Jack the Ripper murders occurred in the late Victorian era, a period marked
by rapid industrialization, imperial expansion, and deep social inequalities.
By the late 19th century, London was the largest and most powerful city in the
world, serving as the political and economic center of the British Empire.
However, while the city prospered, many of its residents—particularly those in
the East End—lived in poverty and faced deplorable living conditions.
Whitechapel, the district where the murders took place, was one of the most
impoverished areas of London. It was densely populated, with thousands of
residents crammed into unsanitary slums.
