Plan of Investigation

I decided on the specific topic of “How Climate Change Affects Tourism”, which came from my

group's central topic of “Climate Change”. I have chosen this topic to educate myself, but also

our population about what is currently happening with the constant changes of climate change. I

would like to find the effects and solutions to this rising issue and possibly encourage our

population to make a change. As a student of English, I want to be able to express my ideas and

emotions thoroughly and gather insights as well as enhance my problem solving skills. I intend

to use newspaper articles, comic strips as well as magazines. From these artifacts, it will help to

improve our oral presentation and provide my group with crucial information for the reflections

of one and two.

Reflection 1

The newspaper article “Climate change leaves future of Pacific Islands highly uncertain”
written by Phil Mercer (2024) is a very interesting piece of writing. Before researching on my
topic I assumed that climate change affected our countries who focused on tourism very heavily.
The article states that “Without immediate and innovative action, the future of tourism in the
region remains highly uncertain.” (Mercer 2024). Before reading this article I was unsure if
Pacific islands were affected as heavily to climate change as opposed to Caribbean islands. This
passage has inspired me to inform my community about the effects of climate change on the
islands.

The author states many different literary techniques to support the threats posed by climate
change to the Caribbean nations as well as islands. It clearly conveys the message of the islands'
beauty through phrases like "the clearest waters" and "pristine beaches," while also highlighting
the constant attraction to storms with expressions such as "at the mercy of nature's whims." The
text notes the increasing frequency of cyclones and personifies the sea, stating it is "encroaching"
on the land. By juxtaposing the islands' stunning beauty with the perils they confront, the writing
evokes a sense of urgency. Rhetorical questions such as "How do we devise solutions?" prompt
readers to contemplate potential remedies. Mentions of figures like UN Secretary-General
António Guterres emphasize that this is a worldwide crisis, making it evident that immediate
action is necessary.

I discovered that the future of all the pacific islands is very uncertain due to the rising sea
levels, stronger storms and constantly changing weather patterns. Many small islands are at
complete risk of losing everything due to their low-lying geographical location. This is making it
harder for people to do everyday things such as growing their own food, finding drinkable water
and living safely without worry.

Reflection 2

The comic strip “Tourism and Travel” written by Alfredo Martirena (2010) is a short but
insightful piece. Before seeing this comic strip I knew that tourism and climate change
had its defects. While the comic strip has no quote the man is seen having fun in a nice
warm beach swimming but when he returns home he is back to his normal life. I was
unsure if there were any downsides to tourism and climate change. This passage has
encouraged me to inform the public that while traveling may be fun, we have to be
mindful of the reality we have to return to.

Artifact two looks more into the artistic side of climate change. When the main character was on
vacation during the first part of the cartoon, he realized that the life he was currently living
would not be there once he had returned home. His life was carefree swimming during his
vacation but upon returning home, he had to face the reality of swimming in the bills he had to
pay as well as returning to his job site.

I learned that even when we may enjoy warm weather and sandy beaches, there is always a
different reality waiting for us to face when we return home from a vacation, Weather it be
personal issues, family issues or workplace issues, no matter how hard we try to hide it, it will
always be present waiting for us. To add on to that, everything once we are on vacation is not so
great due to the fact that we need to realize that while we might have fun travelling we have to
take into consideration the reality of the world.

Reflection 3

The magazine article “Rising global temperatures are already affecting the tourism
industry” written by Ian Shine (2023) is an informative article. Before reading the article
I knew how climate change had affected the tourism industry in a manner of tourists
interests. A quote from the text "The climate crisis is already here,” shows how climate
change has already affected tourism. I was unsure of the deeper side of climate change before
reading the magazine. This article will help me to inform my school community about how
climate change affects a big source of income in many countries.

The text employs various literary techniques to underscore the effects of the climate crisis on the
tourism industry. Imagery vividly illustrates the extreme heat and natural disasters, using phrases
such as "record global temperatures" and mentioning "over 2,000 holidaymakers" fleeing from
wildfires. Hyperbole and personification are evident in conversations about the severity of
heatwaves and the impact of climate change, as seen in phrases like "the climate crisis is already
upon us" and descriptions of heatwaves as "utterly overpowering." Juxtaposition serves to
emphasize the disparity between the allure of well-known tourist spots and the escalating
environmental dangers, including increasing sea levels and the loss of biodiversity.
Rhetorical questions, like "How do we come up with solutions?" provoke thought regarding the
urgent necessity for action. Furthermore, the passage includes direct quotes from experts,
including Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, which add authority and credibility to the
claim that climate change is already in progress.

From the research I gathered on the magazine, I learned that climate change has had a big impact
on travel and tourism around the entire world. Many popular tourist attractions as well as
destinations are facing great challenges. Warmer temperatures are affecting snow based
businesses, causing snow to melt faster and making ski resorts not as attractive. Additionally to
that, extreme heat has caused people to deviate from their original destinations.

What inspired me to collect this information:

I collected this information about how climate change affects tourism due to the fact that it goes hand in
hand with the world and our human activities such as direct lives, the economic state of the world and
different cultures. By understanding how climate change works and its effects, we can gather a deeper
insight on its crashing effects on tourism which is one of the world's most profitable industries. When we
dive into the similarities, it will not only help us see the consequences of environmental changes but help
with the emphasis of sustainable tourism practices. My main goal is to focus our attention to not only the
tourist destinations but the livelihoods of people who depend on the industry. I hope to one day inspire
other people to bring a call to attention and advocate a world where tourism can live together with the
environment.
