18. Read the given extract and answer the following questions.
India is marked by a diversity of physical features such as mountains, plateaus, plains, coasts and islands in
the north, it is bound by the lofty Himalayas. The Arabian Sea in the west, the Bay of Bengal in the east, and
the Indian Ocean in the south wash the shores of the Indian peninsula. To the West of the Western Ghats and
the East of Eastern Ghats lie the Coastal plains. The rivers Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri drain
into the Bay of Bengal. These rivers have formed fertile deltas at their mouth. India has an area of about 3.28
million sq. km. The north-south extent from Ladakh to Kanyakumari is about 3,200 km. And the east-west
extent from Arunachal Pradesh to Kuchchh is about 2,900 km. There is a great variety in the climate,
vegetation, wildlife, and language and culture. In this diversity, we find unity, which is reflected in the
traditions that bind us as one nation. There are seven countries that share land boundaries with India. Across
the sea to the south, lie our island neighbours— Sri Lanka and Maldives.

19. Read the given extract and answer the following questions.

There is a big organisation called the Municipal Corporation that takes care of streetlights, garbage collection,
water supply, keeping the streets and the market clean. It is also responsible for ensuring that diseases do not
break out in the city. It also runs schools, hospitals and dispensaries. In smaller towns, it is called a Municipal
Council. The city is divided into different wards and ward councillors get elected. Elections are held once
every five years for municipality. The work in the Municipal Corporation is divided into different departments.
There is the water department, the garbage collection department, a department to look after gardens, another
to look after roads.

20. Read the given extract and answer the following questions.

The skills of our crafts persons are also apparent in the buildings that have survived, such as stupas. The
word stupa means a mound. While there are several kinds of stupas, round and tall, big and small, these have
certain common features. Generally, there is a small box placed at the centre or heart of the stupa. This box,
known as a relic casket, was covered with earth. Later, a layer of mud brick or baked brick was added on top.
And then, the dome like structure was sometimes covered with carved stone slabs. Some of the earliest Hindu
temples were also built at this time. Deities such as Vishnu, Shiva, and Durga were worshipped in these
shrines. The most important part of the temple was the room known as the garbhagriha. Most temples also
had a space known as the mandapa. It was a hall where people could assemble
