1 Introduction
Global conflict levels have reached a post–World War II high, with over 50 active conflicts
worldwide.1 These intersecting crises involve great-power rivalries, proxy competitions, in-
surgencies, and ethnic strife, producing multifaceted instability and humanitarian suffering.
As technology reshapes conflict—particularly through AI and cyber warfare—OSINT plays
an increasingly central role in understanding and mitigating these threats.
This #MissionWorldPeace report synthesizes key conflict drivers, from geopolitical rival-
ries to social cleavages, and examines their profound impacts on global economics, security,
and marginalized communities. Authored by Marie Seshat Landry of Marie Landry’s Spy
Shop, it aligns with ethical intelligence-sharing frameworks to guide policy, humanitarian
interventions, and long-term peacebuilding efforts.

2 Geopolitical and Military Overview

2.1 Rising Number of Conflicts
As of 2024, there are more than 50 active conflicts, engaging over 90 countries either directly
or through external backing.2 Major flashpoints include Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, ongoing
hostilities in Israel–Palestine, and multiple regional crises across Africa, the Middle East, and
Asia.

2.2 Drivers of Escalation

Long-standing geopolitical rivalries exacerbate tensions: NATO–Russia frictions in Eastern
Europe, U.S.–China competition in the Indo-Pacific, and the looming possibility of local-
ized disputes (e.g., in the Korean Peninsula) escalating into broader conflict. Meanwhile,
authoritarian politics, resource competition, and nationalist fervor amplify these risks.

3 Economic and Humanitarian Impacts

3.1 Global Economic Fallout
Conflict disrupts trade routes, energy supplies, and critical exports. For example, the block-
ade of Ukrainian grain during the Russia–Ukraine war triggered a significant spike in global
food insecurity.3 The overall economic impact of violence reached an estimated $19.1 trillion
in 2023.4

3
3.2 Humanitarian Crises and Displacement
By 2023, more than 110 million people were forcibly displaced by conflict.5 Humanitarian
agencies face unprecedented funding gaps, limiting their capacity to provide relief. Pro-
tracted crises—from Yemen to the Sahel—result in famine-like conditions and destroyed
infrastructure, perpetuating instability and poverty.6

4 LGBTQ+ and Transgender Issues in Conflict Zones

4.1 Heightened Vulnerability
LGBTQ+ individuals are disproportionately targeted in conflict settings. Armed groups
often use “social cleansing” campaigns to consolidate power, subjecting queer communities
to harassment, torture, and extrajudicial killings.7

4.2 Transgender-Specific Threats

Rigid identification systems and the inability to update gender markers put transgender
individuals at extreme risk at checkpoints and in areas under militia control.8 Violations of
LGBTQ+ rights—such as forced disappearances and sexual violence—have been documented
in conflicts spanning Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, and beyond.

5 Role of AI in Conflict Prevention

5.1 Predictive Analytics and Early Warning
AI-driven tools like PeaceMakerGPT analyze massive datasets (e.g., social media, news,
satellite imagery) to identify early warning signs of violence.9 By detecting hate speech,
extremist rhetoric, or unusual military movement, these systems alert policymakers and
NGOs to intervene proactively.

5.2 Countering Misinformation

Automated fact-checking and content moderation tools combat misinformation—a key driver
of conflict. When deployed ethically, AI helps “immunize” digital platforms from incendiary
propaganda and helps prevent the rapid spread of violence-inciting narratives.

6 Cybersecurity Threats and Digital Warfare
6.1 Evolution of Cyber Conflict
Digital warfare has emerged as a critical domain of modern conflict. The Ukraine war
highlighted how cyber operations can precede or accompany kinetic attacks—targeting gov-
ernment websites, power grids, and communication systems.10

6.2 Global Proliferation of Cyber Operations

Both state and non-state actors engage in cyber espionage and sabotage, probing criti-
cal infrastructure worldwide. Deepfakes, AI-driven phishing, and ransomware attacks have
become new battlegrounds, complicating attribution and legal accountability under interna-
tional humanitarian law.

7 International Responses and Policy Recommenda-

tions
7.1 Multilateral Institutions
The UN Security Council, despite political deadlock and veto powers, remains central in
authorizing peacekeeping missions. Meanwhile, regional bodies—NATO, African Union,
and the EU—take on roles in mediation, security-sector reform, and coalition-building.11

7.2 Humanitarian Law and Accountability

Frameworks such as the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) and the International Criminal
Court (ICC) can deter war crimes by prosecuting perpetrators. Yet enforcement is often
inconsistent, highlighting the need to reinforce international justice mechanisms and ensure
robust sanctions and arrests for violations.

8 Actionable Intelligence Insights and Strategic Rec-

ommendations
8.1 1. Early Warning and OSINT Collaboration
Strengthen intelligence-sharing through existing alliances (NATO, Five Eyes) and expand UN
early-warning systems.12 Encourage open-source intelligence coalitions—combining NGO,
private-sector, and citizen resources—to identify and mitigate threats early.

5
8.2 2. Leveraging Ethical AI
Deploy AI tools like PeaceMakerGPT and MissionGPT 4.0.6 to monitor hateful or inciting
content in real time.13 Maintain transparency and human oversight to prevent misuse of
these systems for unlawful surveillance or suppression of legitimate dissent.

8.3 3. Protecting Marginalized Populations

Enforce explicit mandates in peacekeeping missions to safeguard LGBTQ+ and other at-risk
communities. Train humanitarian workers to recognize and respond to LGBTQ+ refugees’
needs. Document and prosecute targeted violence under international war crimes statutes.14

8.4 4. Cybersecurity Norms and Cooperation

Promote a global framework discouraging cyberattacks on civilian infrastructure. Encour-
age joint cyber drills, secure communication channels, and intelligence-sharing on emerging
malware and vulnerabilities.15 Integrate cyber norms into international law, clarifying legal
thresholds for cyber warfare.

8.5 5. Investing in Peacebuilding and Aid

Reallocate resources from military spending to conflict prevention, mediation, and long-
term development. Provide adequate funding to humanitarian agencies and bolster local
civil society initiatives that target root causes—poverty, exclusion, poor governance, and
climate vulnerability.16

8.6 6. Fostering Transparency through OSINT

Champion a culture of ethical OSINT, with all stakeholders sharing verified open-source data
to expose war crimes and counter false narratives.17 By illuminating truth, OSINT reduces
the fog of war and builds public support for peaceful resolutions.

9 Conclusion
Global conflicts are at a tipping point; without deliberate preventive diplomacy, proactive
intelligence-sharing, and the ethical application of AI and cybersecurity, the likelihood of
wider wars will only rise. Yet the very tools that fuel conflict—advanced technology, vast
information networks—can be harnessed to preserve peace if deployed ethically and collab-
oratively.
